Heidelberg's Altstadt: A Self-Guided Audio Tour

Join Heidelberg resident Erin McGann on a winding self-guided audio tour of the picturesque Altstadt, the old town of this fascinating German city on the banks of the Neckar River.  Take in the famous Church of the Holy Ghost in the center of the main market square, discover the carvings that allowed residents to check the legal size of their pretzels (really!), hear stories of the catastrophic floods, find out which buildings are the oldest, hear how the university students got so rowdy they ended up with their own prison, and learn about the romantic history of our ruined castle.  The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

The narrator's voice always started with perfect timing and was very pleasant to hear. It was just the right dose of little bits of information for our packed day of sightseeing. The tour is well suited for those who just want to stroll through the streets and hear a little anecdote from time to time. If you would like to learn a lot, the tour is probably not ideal for you. Accordingly good price (5.44 €) performance ratio. (It was our first tour of this kind, we don't have anything to compare it to yet.) All in all we were very satisfied.

Excellent way to be introduced to parts of Heidelberg’s sights and history. A real plus is being able to tour at your own pace. Feel like stopping for a meal? No problem. Continue the tour after your meal or even the following day. Need help with tech aspects? Support is just an email away. Many thanks for 21st century technology.

A new activity that we just wanted to try out, which took us to the most important sights and brought us closer to the city in a playful way.

Excellent option for a self paced tour. Precise directions were given making it to easy to follow along without having to stare at the map.

The tour was our small group a successful insight into the history of Heidelberg.
