Explore Lisbon's queer history on this treasure hunt adventure in the streets of Principe Real and Bairro Alto!
You'll hear stories and anecdotes from centuries of scandalous, fascinating, triumphant (sometimes bizarre) queer history, as we stop at the sites where history was made (and we also explore the modern gay scene venues at the same time).
Then we all come together in the lounge/ bar/ garden/ pool of Lisbon's largest gay hotel for a pub-quiz social (bring your swim-suit if it's hot!).
Last Sunday of each month. Total distance: 4.6km (2.8miles). Approx 4.5 hours walking. Ages 16+.
Come solo or with friends - meet new people and be introduced to mixed or same-sex groups - you decide. Your small team is given a briefing, directions and a map to follow around todays gay scene venues, stopping at the sites of queer history to answer questions/objectives.
Move at your own pace, and everyone comes together after three hours to see which historical anecdotes and scandals caught your attention, what you learned about Lisbon and what made you laugh along the way. There are fun prizes for the highest scores and most creative answers - and consolation prizes for everyone!
Plus - a bonus gift: 'The LONG LIST': 48-page updated guide to Lisbon's LGBTQ scene. Written by locals, and updated every month, 'The LONG LIST' features scene venues, this month's queer events, 'the Short List' of highlights, gay beach guide, community/sports/social groups, women's groups and services, health services, etc, etc. An essential 'must-have' for tourists and residents!
History highlights of the treasure hunt include: 17thCentury cruising sites, the Inquisition: resistance and persecution, lesbians battling censorship, why Fado is queer, how Pride is different in Lisbon, how Fernando Pessoa has been denied, bisexual jazz-legend Josephine Baker dodging the police, who were the 'Three Marias', and the 'Two Fernandes', how LGBT rights were established, the first drag shows, how to see queer film in Lisbon, gay writers, queer pop-stars, straight censors, disgraced politicians, Trans nuns, real-life spies - all this and more as we stroll through the modern gay scene, and end with a pub-quiz social!
