Yaxha had a long history of occupation with the first settlement being founded sometime in the Middle Preclassic period (A.C. 1000 – 350 BC). It developed into the largest city in the eastern Peten lakes region during the Late Preclassic and expanded into an enormous city during the Early Classic (250–600). At this time, in common with other sites in Petén, it shows strong influence from the distant metropolis of Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico. It was eclipsed during the Late Classic (600–900) by neighbouring Naranjo but was never completely dominated. The city survived well into the Terminal Classic (c. 800–900) but was abandoned by the Postclassic period (c. 900–1525). Explore one of the Mayan sites surrounded by lakes, where you can walk along original paths and streets. We take a walk of approximately 3 hours. And then climb the highest structure and enjoy the best sunset in a Mayan structure. Our sunset excursion was great. We were able to hike around the whole site and our guide was amazing! He explained a lot of the cultural and historical facts, he pointed out a lot of the fauna of the place (we saw many toucans, woodpeckers and other birds, hawler monkeys, etc.). The sunset was a bit cloudy so it was not a 100% great but the day was lovely! Thank you!

Our guide was absolutely incredible and shared so much of his history and personal connection with us! It was a little hard to find the group initially at the meeting spot, and the WhatsApp number provided by GetYourGuide was just a general number and not at all helpful. I still give this activity 5 stars for how incredible the guide was.

Sunset was awesome. The ruins were smaller than the ones in Tikal so it might not be as impressive.

I find the sunset in Yaxhá much more spectacular than in Tikal 🥰

Even when I got a bad ankle the guide was amazing!
