From San Sebastian: Guggenheim and Basque Coast Day Trip

9. From San Sebastian: Guggenheim and Basque Coast Day Trip

A day trip in a van through back roads of the Basque coast, visiting historic town and unique natural landscapes, ending up in the most cosmopolitan city in the Basque Country. The road has curves (a few) but there will be plenty of stops to breathe the sea air and contemplate the horizon. The French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote: “Gernika is the happiest town in the world. Their affairs are governed by a board of peasants that meets under an oak tree and always makes the fairest decisions ”. And here we go, to the city bombed by Nazi planes in 1937 that inspired one of the most well-known paintings in the world, Picasso’s mural-sized “Guernica”. We will visit the city and, of course, the tree under which the (we hope) “fairer decisions” are made. Memorize this name: ‘Urdaibai’ and try to pronounce it well (it’s not easy, we know) because you won’t forget it. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, Urdaibai is a large estuary at which mountains, rivers, the sea and large stretches of sand come together. Depending on the tide and time of day, the landscape (and the dozens of birds that inhabit it) may be radically different. We’ll also stop at Mundaka, a hot spot on the world's ‘surfaris’ routes: its beach has one of the most (possibly the most) perfect waves on the planet, with a left-hand break. Some call it “Dragonstone,” but its name is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the ground by a line of 241 stairs and crowned by a hermitage. Gaztelugatxe became ultra-famous after appearing in the Games Of Thrones series disguised as Dragonstone: Though the 'castle' is a cgi effect, everything else (dizzying cliffs, sharp rocks, flocks of birds, the noise of the sea ...) is rabidly real . The people of Bilbao have always claimed that their city was the capital of the world. When the Guggenheim museum opened in 1997, that prophecy came true and the building became an architectural phenomenon whose influence has spilled over into the rest of the city. The people of Bilbao say that the museum is actually the “doghouse” of Puppy, the iconic statue that welcomes you at the entrance (Basque ironic mode on). We’ll get to know the building and its main works of contemporary art.

San Juan de Gaztelutxe, walk along the Basque coast

10. San Juan de Gaztelutxe, walk along the Basque coast

This area is full of beautiful landscapes, great culture, superb gastronomy and breath-taking history. This popular spot is much more than film set and I want to introduce its great natural richness and contribute to the conservation of the place. Discover the most popular spot around Bilbao on a different way! The way we work makes it special. Avoid the crowds and join our group of friends. We don`t go with more than eight people, making every experience unique and personal. I will be then tour guide, ensuring the quality of every tour. Actually, this is a special spot for me, as my parents were married in this Chapel. Once we arrive to the area of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, if weather permits, we’ll go to a secret viewpoint hidden among the vegetation. There you’ll get an idea of the hike. Then we’ll hike till the top of the island for 90 minutes. On our way I’ll explain the importance of this place for the locals. You will discover the ecological importance of this environment and see plant or animal species you might haven't seen!

Marina was excellent! We were picked up and made the trip out to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. It's quite the hike to get there and back from the parking lot. They're not kidding when they suggest comfortable shoes! Marina was very knowledgeable about the area and the history of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. She's very friendly and easy to talk to. The tour of the Txakoli winery was really neat. There are many in the area, but we went to Gorrondona. Very small winery outside of Bakio. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the Bodega, their processes, and the differences between their different growing areas within the valley. Would recommend this trip (and Marina) to anyone interested in the tour!

Absolutely fantastic tour from start to finish. Our guide Pilar was very friendly and knowledgeable, making sure everyone was happy and stuck together at every moment. We first set off to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, there was an easier option for people who didn't want to do the hike up to the chapel. Be aware that if you do the hike (approx 1.5 hours) it can be challenging but it's definitely worth it for the views. I don't think I would have changed a single thing about the tour. I highly recommend to anyone looking to explore these beautiful parts of the Basque Country

I participated with a friend. There were two other people, making a total of four people. It was an ideal tour to visit Castellgatxe and Guernica, which we wanted to visit. It was also good that we returned to Bilbao around 3pm, as it allowed us to use the day efficiently. Our guide, Adur, was the best! During the tour, he taught us a lot of things that we could only ask a Basque person, such as about the Basque region and the differences between the Basque Country and Spain. The hospitality was also high, and we were very satisfied during the tour. I recommend it!

This tour was my favorite part during my trip to Spain. It went above and beyond my expectations, and I left the tour feeling like I learned plenty of new things while enjoying the sights and sounds of the Basque country. If you're think about booking this, do it now!

Our guide Adur was great. He was very knowledgeable, fun and helpful. We enjoyed the whole tour. Thank you!
