Dovrefjell National Park: Hiking Tour and Musk Ox Safari

1. Dovrefjell National Park: Hiking Tour and Musk Ox Safari

Together with an experienced guide, you will search for musk ox while hiking through the beatiful National Park of Dovrefjell. Along the way, you will learn about the musk ox's behaviour and history, other wildlife such as reindeer, as well as the importance of the national park to local culture. We meet at our office at Hjerkinnhusvegen 35 at 09:45, outside the entrance of Frich's Hjerkinn. The safari starts at 10:00, and then we drive 5-10 min to where we start the hike. If you don't have your own vehicle, please contact us beforehand and so we can arrange transport. (NOTE: During the summer season, there is a shuttle bus to Snøheim leaving from the same address at 09:45. Do NOT get on this bus, as it is not connected to our safari. We will not wait for you or refund your booking.) The musk ox are wild animals, and to ensure everyone's safety, we don't go closer than 200 m. The animals move freely in the national park, which means that they are in different places every day, and the hike can be anywhere between 6 and 15 km in total. The safari usually takes 5-6 hours, depending on group fitness. Dogs are allowed to join, but in some cases the owner and dog have to keep a longer distance to the animals. The weather in the Norwegian mountains can be unpredictable, so bring extra warm clothes. We recommend wearing waterproof hiking shoes. Bring a packed lunch and something to drink. If you have binoculars, you should bring those too! The safari ends at the same place as the starting point.

What people are saying about Hjerkinn

Our mixed oxen safari guide Kim was great: very committed, friendly, motivating and in a good mood, she led us through a rainy day to several mixed oxen groups 😊 we learned a lot about these animals and the area. She also always looked at the group's abilities and involved the children well. She also had a telescope with her that could be used to take great photos on her cell phone. Be sure to take binoculars with you! Waterproof shoes were absolutely necessary!

The tour was amazing. We had a small group of just 4, our guide Kim was very kind, we had great weather, and we spotted multiple different herds of musk ox with a total amount of about 30! We lost count actually... The hike was nice and we walked about 10km. The field and hike route are quite popular so don't expect to be completely on your own, but the area is huge so it doesn't bother at all. Thank you for the experience Kim!

We had an awesome day. We had a lot of sun, there were only 8 of us in the group. Ki our guide was really great. I don't speak English very well but I understood her well. Passionate, she made this day an unforgettable experience! We were lucky enough to see 19 oxen! The landscapes are magnificent! Really to do!

A well-guided hike. After we saw the musk oxen, we would have liked to walk further. In this case, unfortunately, we just stood and then went back. Kim was a good hike leader. But we would have liked to hike

The activity is wonderful! Highly recommended. Our guide was Uwe: he was super competent and funny! I will do it again!
