What to Expect
Learn of the history that inexorably binds Switzerland and Russia, and the often overlooked political and cultural ties between the countries.

As a safe-haven for many of Russia's exiled Bolshevik theorists and activists, Swiss society played a key role in the development of ideals that would eventually overthrow the Czar in the Communist revolution. The revolution precipitated a long political break between the countries, but at the beginning of the 20th century Swiss universities were packed with Russian scholars prior to World War I. The equality afforded to women meant that they too had access to a university education, and many graduates of both genders were to form the vanguard of the Communist movement.

See many of the places relevant to the exiled revolutionaries, the zoological gardens, and the home of one of Russia's richest emigrants to Switzerland, and learn how Swiss social progression heavily influenced its idealistic Russian guests.
