Full description
Start your journey at the Zermatt-Matterhorn valley station. Within 45 minutes, reach Europe’s highest mountain station at 12,740 ft (3,883 meters) above sea level - the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. First, travel in comfort in an 8-seat gondola of the Matterhorn Express on your way to Trockerner Steg. Pass lush green meadows, old Valais hamlets, and enchanting forests before the landscape changes to one with impressive moraines and stones polished by ice and glaciers.  At Trockener Steg, hop into the highest 3S cable car transporting you up to the peak. Take in spectacular views through the panoramic windows and enjoy the heated seats while crossing the Theodul Glacier. Once you reach the summit, visit the viewing platform and marvel at 38 alpine giants of the French, Italian, and Swiss Alps as well as 14 glaciers. At the cinema lounge, enjoy short movies about mountaineering, the local fauna and flora, the lift facilities, and ice and snow. Or explore the highest ice palace in the world and admire handmade sculptures in the eternal ice. Before you leave the magical fairytale behind, try regional specialties at the restaurant or purchase Matterhorn souvenirs.

Must visit in Zermatt! I have taken cable cars to mountain tops in other places, but the views this cable car has is exceptional. We hopped on and off at different points and hiked around the Matterhorn glacier hike route. This hike was out of the world. The picture we’ve taken is something we’ll treasure for the rest of our lives. Overall a brilliant experience and something every traveller must do in Zermatt.

This is an unforgettable experience. Word of warning when pre-booking / planning in advance! When we arrived to exchange our vouchers we were told the third cable car to Glacier Paradise was closed due to weather conditions. We had to still do the trip even though we’d only get up two stops, as we were leaving Zermatt the next day. As it turned out, when we walked round to check at the second stop, the third cable car had reopened, so we were lucky enough to get all the way up! The top of the Matterhorn was in cloud but you have to accept that’s a possibility and enjoy the rest of the incredible views. We went quite late in the day and it was close to the last run so we didn’t get off at the third stop. We experienced having one of the cars to ourselves, which was lovely, and also being in one with a large, excessively noisy group with different personal space expectations to us, who spoilt that particular ride - again you have to take the rough with the smooth!

Not a very busy day in early September 2021 - so everything at the very top was closed. Nevertheless a pretty good view of the Matterhorn Glacier, on a partially cloudy day. The cable cars are excellent (though not as modern as those new ones at JungFrau). There are actually 4 lifts that interconnect, so you never have to leave the same car. Cars have external racks for both mountain bikes and skiis.
