Full description
Experience a culinary love affair with Zanzibar and explore its 100-year relationship to spices on a combined food tour and cooking lesson.
Begin at the source of the island's culinary reputation with a visit to a local spice farm. Taste seasonal samples and learn about the local farming techniques. On top of spicy favorites like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, chili, vanilla, saffron and curry, the island also cultivates pineapples, jackfruits, lemons, limes, oranges, pomelos, durians and coconuts. Benefit from the chance to taste some straight from the tree!
After snacking on a variety of fresh fruits, head over to a nearby farming village for a rare opportunity to explore a local settlement off the tourist route. Experience local life and the development of the island before going to meet a farmer at her small cassava farm. Try your hand at African farming, and then head to the outdoor kitchen for a cooking lesson. Use ingredients fresh from the village and nearby farmland for the vegetarian dish, and discover how to make coconut milk from a fresh coconut.
End with a tasty Swahili lunch, including the dish you prepared, as well as spiced rice, bananas and local in-season produce. Journey back to Stone Town with a full belly and sense of complete satisfaction. Ask your guide about other off-the-beaten-path adventures in Zanzibar.
