The terracotta figures are life-sized, typically ranging from 175 cm (5.74 ft) to about 200 cm (6.6 ft) (the officers are typically taller). They vary in height, uniform, and hairstyle in accordance with their portrayed rank. Originally, the figures were painted with ground precious stones, intensely fired bones (white), pigments of iron oxide (dark red), cinnabar (red), malachite (green), azurite (blue), charcoal (black), cinnabar barium copper silicate mix (Chinese purple or Han purple), tree sap from a nearby source, (more than likely from the Chinese lacquer tree) (brown), and other colors including pink, lilac, red, white, and one unidentified color. However, in Xi'an's dry climate, much of the color coating would flake off in less than four minutes after removing the mud surrounding the army.

Fantastic experience! We received a schedule from the tour operator that was followed to the letter. The trip by high-speed train to and from Xi'an was carefully planned by the tour operator and went without a hitch. The standard on board the high-speed train to Xi'an was much lower than the standard on board the high-speed train back to Beijing. We traveled first class both ways. The service was much better on the way back to Beijing; it seems as if two different companies operated the trains. The drivers were friendly and picked us up at the agreed place and time. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a deep insight into the history behind the terracotta army. The Terracotta Museum is a must-see if you are interested in ancient Chinese history and comes highly recommended. We are very satisfied with the tour operator and will definitely use them again :)

The tour was really fun and Andy was really nice with us. He got us from the Hotel which was really good for us. During the travel he told us a lot of interesting things, not only about the terracota army but also about Xi'an and about chinese culture. The museum was really full of people because we choose to go on summer, but Andy made his best for the experience to be good for us. The lunch at his parents house was amazing, the food was delicious and one of the best food we ate in China and his parents were super sweet with us too.
