The Wieliczka Salt Mines has been a major attraction in Krakow because of its ancient history as well as its modern relevance to World War II when the Germans planned to set up an underground armament factory in the mines. The mines are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and attract several visitors annually from around the globe. Your guided tour around the 3km stretch of the salt mines begins with a descent into the underground mines through a wooden staircase. Once you reach the mine level, your guide will take you around the mines’ labyrinthine passages. St. Kinga’s chapel is one of the most beautiful parts of the tour. Our guide through the mine was very entertaining and had many interesting points to make. The huge church underground at 125m is quite amazing. Definitely recommend doing the trip with a guide (I think you have to anyway as it is all quite a maze through all the levels. It was actually warmer down there than I expected, you really don’t need a jumper or jacket to keep you warm, as the temperature down there is not so very chilly even though you are up to 135m underground.
