Full description
Spend the day discovering Whangarei’s Maori culture and heritage, see New Zealand’s resident kiwi bird, and visit a Grade Two Listed homestead with this combination pass. Start the day at the region’s only nocturnal Kiwi House, which turns day into night to replicate a natural living environment for New Zealand’s elusive kiwi bird. Watch the birds foraging for food and interacting in their closure as they would in the wild. State-of-the-art cameras also allow you to peek inside their burrows, where you can find them preening, napping, or simply doing the housework. Kiwi House is also home to Tuataras, an ancient gecko species from the time of the dinosaurs.

Head to Whangarei Museum next to discover the region’s early-settler history through stories and displays. Learn about how the local environment was formed, who lived here and why, as well as how this is reflected in the city and its inhabitants today. This is a unique opportunity to discover the significance of Maori culture thanks to the array of important artifacts and treasures housed here.

Finally, visit the Heritage Park at Kiwi North, which is home to the 1886 Glorat Clarke Homestead. A stunning Grade Two Listed heritage building, the homestead sits on its original site and boasts magnificent views across the harbor to the distant Mount Manaia. Uncover the history of the homestead, which is in remarkably good condition and considered a museum in its own right.
