The tour is also suitable for inexperienced people, provided that you can walk for 3 hours. We saw a lot of birds, including the rare takahe and two kiwis. Glowworms, wetas, and an enormous number of rare bridge lizards (Tuataras) were also seen. Very competent guide. Even if it is relatively expensive, it was 100 percent worth it.

Exciting and a different tour

Despite the rain, we had an exciting evening. The two guides guided the group purposefully through the area and so we saw many birds, reptiles, gloworms and fish, apart from kiwis. But you should be aware that this is not a walk of joy. Sturdy shoes, at least trainers and clothing appropriate to the weather must be provided. The kiwis were hiding that evening, we heard them but saw none. Of course, this cannot be guaranteed. And it shouldn't be a criticism either. Even without it, the Zealandia is highly recommended for nature lovers both during the day and at night.

Great Experience

The night tour of the sanctuary was an exeperience not to be missed, going with no expectation I was pleased to see the passionate work carried out to help re-establish the natural environment of fauna & flora that existed in the region prior to mans intervention. Our guide was informative on the night and helped us understand what was nessesary to protect the area for years to come. Seeing some highly endangered birds, reptiles and to see the elusive small spotted kiwi was indeed a highlight.
