After meeting your guide, you will enjoy a scenic drive over the Remutaka Ranges, with a brief stop at the summit, before descending into the Wairarapa region. Martinborough began in 1870 as the township of Wharekaka, close to the Māori settlement of Waihenga. In its first decade churches, a school, hotel, general store and post office opened. In 1879 John Martin, a wealthy local runholder, purchased neighboring land and founded a new town, naming it after himself. Martinborough was New Zealand's first Private town and was mainly settled by ambitious Scots who were accustomed to working the land with sheep and dairy farming. After the discovery in 1986 that Martinborough was akin to Burgundy with climate and growing conditions the region developed a reputation for producing superior award-winning wine which is the talk of Wellington and the envy of more established wine regions worldwide. “Martinborough is still widely considered to be one of the country's prime wine regions. Its claim to fame is the exceptional quality of its Pinot Noir wines, produced by some of the most highly regarded wineries in New Zealand.”

What people are saying about Wellington

The whole experience was excellent, our guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The choice of wineries was excellent. Poppies was outstanding and our host Poppy was so passionate about the wine, just delightful. Lunch at Poppies was superb and dinner at Brac & Bow was perfect. The scenery of the Wairarapa Coast is as it is described, “wild” and the seal colony was a highlight. Highly recommend this Zozo tour.

We enjoyed a fantastic day with our well informed and amiable guide. The tour gave us a great opportunity to experience a closer touch with New Zealand away from the standard group tours. Phil remained flexible and approachable to minor customizing of our day to suit the needs. His familiarity with the area and the local venues paid off with a great personalized feeling to the experience. A very highly recommended experience.

We were picked up on time by Steve and the drive was broken up with some stops at points of interest. We loved Margrain Vinyard and enjoyed the tasting and information. Moy Hall was fantastic for lunch and I was glad that we could get in to Palliser Estate.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the Martinborough area and all the local wineries

Great trip - thanks to Phil for making it an awesome experience
