Full description
Experience the best travel stories for yourself! Join a local expert and uncover hidden gems on this Lonely Planet Experience. You’ve seen the major sites in Washington DC — the Capitol Building, the Smithsonian Museums and the thought-provoking memorials — but did you ever wonder about the people who built this great city? Join this foodie tour of H Street, the neighborhood that housed the builders and artisans who built the city and made it come to life. After a introduction at the meeting point, you’ll kick off the tour with a delicious snack from a local grocery store. You will continue to make a loop around the H Street corridor, visiting restaurants, markets, churches and historic sites. The foodie stops will vary depending on what is available on the day but you will be promised a culinary roller coaster ride that may include freshly baked local bread, popular sweet treats from an outstanding local bakery (like mom used to make) and a slice of the capital’s best pizza.  Along the way, you’ll hear some amazing stories about the people who used to live and work in this district, learn how food has played a big part in bringing the community together and taste for yourself why DC’s food scene is enjoying a much deserved resurgence. After you have been filled up with some of the best food in the city, don’t forget to ask your local guide for more hints and tips on how to get the most from your stay in Washington DC.

I really enjoyed the H-Street food tour. We had a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide who not only knew a lot about the different street food places and restaurants we stopped by but also talked us through the neighborhood's and DC's history. We got to eat quite a lot (so you don't have to worry about being hungry at the end of the tour) however the food was not outstanding - though certainly authentic. I would recommend the tour to everyone who's interested in H street area's recent history and who'd like to taste authentic (North American) food.

The tour was very fun, and the food was great. Our tour guide was also very personable and had a lot of knowledge.

Nice guide

It was interesting to walk in H-street, the food was perfectly ok, but maybe a little lower on the food on this trip than other cities I've been to. The guide was fairly new, very nice.
