What You'll Do
  • Learn about some of the Gallery’s most prized works by artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Jan van Eyck, and J.M.W. Turner
  • Gain a greater understanding of the goals of creating a collection for a nation
  • Enjoy a private tour with your personal group of 6 participants
Take a private tour the National Gallery, led by an art historian, and explore the collections of the West Building. Learn about some of the Gallery’s most treasured works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Jan van Eyck, and others.
What to Expect
Your 3-hour private tour begins with a discussion of the founding of the National Gallery and an examination of the building itself. Inside, your historian guide will talk about philanthropy and the arts in the early 20th century while you’re in the Founders Room, where you’ll see portraits of the Gallery’s earliest benefactors.

As you move through the galleries of the West Building you’ll view the Gallery’s earliest masterworks, from the Italian 13th- and 14th-century works up through much of its 19th-century American art collections. You'll learn about the development of the major genres of western art, such as portraiture, still-life, and landscape. You’ll also learn more about the national art schools, observe how they engage with one another, and hear how they developed in relation to local causes and values.

The new sculpture galleries, which are vaulted rooms with large windows allowing in plenty of natural light, illuminate the transition from the 2-dimensional world of painting to 3-dimensional treasures. You’ll examine art starting with the Middle Ages and on through the early 20th century. Works range from sculpture to the decorative arts of the Renaissance and 18th-century France, Italian Renaissance medals and plaquettes, and Chinese porcelains.

By the end of the tour you’ll have a greater understanding of the goals involved in creating a collection for the nation and how that collection has evolved in the 70 years of the Gallery’s history.
