"Legends and Landmarks: A Tallinn Walking Adventure"

Panoramic Tour of the Old Town: Embark on a captivating journey through Tallinn's Upper Town, Toompea, a small hill at the heart of the old city. Our exploration begins at the foot of the hill, where a medieval knight's castle awaits, setting the stage for tales of the Livonian Order, the legend of Linda and Kalev, and a 19th-century dispute shaping one of Tallinn's streets. As we continue, we encounter Ibrahim Hannibal's house on the corner, prompting reflections on the events of August 1991. Our path leads to the city's largest tower, Kiek in de Kök, evoking memories of the Livonian War and Ivan the Terrible. Descending into the "Danish King's Garden," we traverse the Short and Long Leg streets. The journey unfolds on Palace Square, showcasing the magnificent façade of the Governor's Palace and the later, equally splendid Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Following our visit to the cathedral, where Patriarch of all Russia Alexy II served and St. John of Kronstadt attended the consecration, we stroll through "House School" alley to the white Gothic church, the oldest structure on Toompea. Originally a Catholic cathedral for three centuries, it now stands as a Lutheran cathedral, hosting a remarkable collection of heraldry, epitaphs, and sarcophagi of renowned seafarers such as Krusenstern and Wrangel. Honoring the memory of the hero of the Patriotic War and General Kutuzov's son-in-law, Tiesenhausen, we delve into discussions on the Protestant Reformation and its impact on Europe. Despite its modest 7 hectares, Toompea Hill encapsulates Estonia's political history, guiding us past the majestic Benckendorff House towards a breathtaking viewing platform overlooking the Lower Town, which thrived under the rule of merchants trading with Russia. Indulging in glazed nuts and sipping hot Glintvein, we progress towards the government building terrace. Here, we delve into discussions about islands, the fortress wall, and politics. Descending via stairs, we find ourselves in the Lower Town near the former city gates. Here we will find a Boris Yeltsin memorial plaque. Strolling down Monastery Street and entering the Transfiguration Cathedral to admire Ivan Zarudny's majestic baroque iconostasis. The cathedral will be opened just for us. Our journey continues through Lai Street to Oleviste Church, enjoying views of the Three Sisters, Sea Gates, and landmarks like St. Olaf's and St. Canute's Guilds, the Russian Embassy, and the Church of the Holy Spirit. Passing through a charming passage, we reach Town Hall Square, where we explore the world's oldest pharmacy. The tour will end near Viru Gate. Join me on this panoramic tour, and let's uncover the periods of Tallinn's rich history together!

Everything went smoothly. I was met by Svetlana at the end of the escalator. We drove in a minibus to the upper part of Tallinn to the first stop, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Then we continued past historical buildings to two viewing points. From there you had a fantastic view over the whole city to the sea. Svetlana explained a lot. She was very friendly. Sometimes she spoke very quickly (in English) so that I didn't understand everything. She led us down into the old town. On the way she explained things about the castle walls and the ghosts of the monks. In the old town she showed us interesting places and gave us restaurant tips. She showed us the place where we were picked up by a bus at 4:50 p.m. and taken to the ship. Unfortunately, I understood that she would be back after the free time. That wasn't the case. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank her and say goodbye.

A brilliantly put together tour of the old town, with a good mixture of history, local culture and opportunities for photos and even a short snack break. We also had about 3h at leisure after the guided tour and before the bus back to the ferry, so we had plenty of time to have some lunch, revisit the sites we liked best and do some souvenir shopping. Definitely wear sturdy and comfortable shoes as the terrain is very steep and uneven due to the old cobbled streets in the old town.

Great guide and storyteller - really an interesting presentation (both the sights and words) presentation of the history, and good talks about the current time, while we walked through the beautiful Tallin. Huge recommendation. Another interesting sight into culture was the ferry trip with bingo, karaoke and dancing! All good fun.

Attentive guide, very professional and friendly. Very informative. I recommend.

Guide very knowledgeable. Good english. Paid attention to questions
