Full description
Peek into the unknown world of Fiakerei (horse-drawn carriage driving). Who are the Fiakers? Where did they come from? And most importantly, where are they going in the evening after work? Get to the bottom of these secrets, and many more, by visiting the original Viennese Fiaker horse stable. For the first time, you'll have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the traditional two teams of "Lohnkutchen" (the original horse-drawn taxi!) Explore the unique Fiaker Horse Center in Vienna's 11th district of Simmering. An exclusive barn tour will give you insight into what's going on in a traditional Viennese Fiaker family business. Then, take a ride in an original Viennese Fiaker - the ubiquitous passenger transport of the 18th century - back to the city before the work of the Fiaker starts. During the carriage ride, you'll pass through the up-and-coming St. Marx district, heading to the city centre via the famous Ringstraße. You'll be dropped off at Michaelerplatz in the city center, a perfect place to continue your exploration of all of Vienna's top sites.

We were the only English speakers attending our trip. The guide took his time translating both and took time to answer our questions as well. The introduction tour of the stables was cool and learning the history of the Fiaker was interesting. They also go into detail on how well the horses are taken care of. They’re treated better than most people! It was nice to see coming from the US. After the tour you take a nice ~1 hour ride into the city center where it drops you off in the heart of the city.

The starting point is just outside. There we could see how the horses were harnessed. The guide clearly explained everyday life and answered our questions. We were able to learn a lot of new things. Then it started, get in and drive comfortably to the center. The journey was pleasantly long and we drove to the Hofburg/Michaelerplatz. We can unreservedly recommend the experience. Vienna would be missing something if there were no more carriages. It's just part of it and no one bothers that the rest of the traffic is slowed down. Some in Germany would go nuts. In Vienna people take it with equanimity. Coaches and coachmen are real eye-catchers.

We visited the stables at the beginning of March so it wasn’t that busy. Which was nice. We We’re able to stroke and talk to some of the horses. Considering it was a working stable it was very clean. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The ride back was relaxed and enjoyable.
