This is not a guided tour; there is no guide. You go into the Stephanie Restaurant, which is lovely and located inside the Hotel Stephanie, are seated at a private table, and roughly 5 courses are served from starter to dessert. The food is excellent and authentically Austrian. However, there is no real discussion of the food beyond a basic description (i.e. no discussion of region or history, if any)

Visit the oldest hotel in Vienna and enjoy a culinary journey through the former crown lands of the Austrian monarchy, garnished with an insight into the history of Viennese cuisine. Learn links Viennese Schnitzel to Field Marshal Radetzky, whether Hungarian goulash actually originated in Vienna, where Kaiserschmarren (shredded pancake) got its name, and whether the top round is actually the best piece of beef. Try 7 delicious specialties including veal goulash with pretzel sticks, beef soup with sliced pancakes and Kaiserschöberl (unsweetened sponge cake), Viennese schnitzel with potato salad, and boiled filet of beef with chive sauce and apple horseradish sauce, as well as plum jam turnovers, apple strudel, and shredded pancakes.

We had read the variable reviews of this experience but booked as we couldn’t find an equivalent event. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We were wonderfully looked after with excellent staff and good food. We accelerated our understanding of the key austrian dishes and were totally full at the end. Thank you Hotel Stephanie for your warm welcome and excellent service
