Full description
The Belvedere in Vienna is one of the leading museums worldwide. Its famous art collection includes works ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. The unique complex, with its two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere and extensive gardens, is one of the most stunning Baroque architectural marvels in the world. Highlights include the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings as well as prominent works from the periods of Viennese Biedermeier, Austrian Baroque, Vienna around 1900, and French Impressionism. Now, for the first time in decades, the museum will once again host large-scale special exhibitions that you can admire on your visit. In the 18th century, the Austrian general Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned the renowned Baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to build the complex. After the death of Prince Eugene, Empress Maria Theresa acquired the entire complex and transformed the Upper Belvedere into an exhibition venue for the imperial collections – making it one of the first public museums in the world. The Lower Belvedere, formerly the residence of Prince Eugene, is home to illustrious exhibitions. The modern pavilion of the Belvedere 21, by architect Karl Schwanzer, is a stage for contemporary art. The Baroque gardens of the Belvedere rank among the most beautiful in the world. The main garden is situated between the Lower and the Upper Belvedere and extends over three large terraces. The Belvedere park is also home to the Botanical Garden and the oldest Alpine garden in Europe.

Know before you go

  •  The museum will host large-scale special exhibitions. The Belvedere’s impressive Biedermeier collection has been brought into focus in an original exhibition on the second floor (since 12 May). As a result, works from the Impressionist and Interwar periods will not be on view until March 2022.
  • From June 18, the museum will host another revolutionary exhibition at the Upper Belvedere: 'Lovis Corinth. Life, a Celebration!' showcasing the work of an artist who, across epochs and styles, managed to capture life in all its complexity.
  • Works from the Baroque collection will not be shown. You will have the opportunity to admire the famous Character Heads by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt from January 20, 2022 once the major exhibition 'The Age of Dürer','which explores the early Renaissance in Austria, comes to an end.

It is easy to book and compared to other websites it is cheaper if you book with the app. We booked just for the upper level and art exhibition. It is a must to go there if you are in Wien. The place is well maintained and the art exhibit is excellent.

It ok, very short museum. The highlight of course was The Kiss, captivating picture!!! The lower rooms, we’ll what can I say. I guess I just don’t get some art!!! ‘Glue on Canvas’ was one piece, and it really was just glue on canvas. Each to their own. Glad we went to see the Kiss though. Made it for us.

I have been here before. I came back because I like taking photos and always see things in a different light. I didn't have a printer and the staff said that I would have to go to the booking office (100 metres) to mail the code to them and they would then print out a ticket for me. This was an inconvenience and I don't see a solution for this besides asking Belvedere to include it in the scanning device. Belvedere gets very crowded after about 11 and people have check-in times for entry. Belvedere is a giant art gallery but if you like middle ages art then go down to Lower Belevede as this is a special place for me. Need a break and a cup of Viener Melange - then go to the cafeteria, it is great!
