Full description
Escape the crowds of central Venice and catch a glimpse of what life in the city used to be like, as an island of artisans famous for their traditional craft skills, passed down from generation to generation. Your guide will keep you entertained on the short boat ride to the small island of Murano, famous for its glass making traditions. Historically, Murano glassblowers were the only Europeans that knew how to create a mirror, and their skills were so valued they were banned from leaving Venice on the threat of execution. Watch a craftsman in action and listen to a description of the process in English. Learn how silica sand becomes glass, and how the glass is given color. Afterwards, there will be time to browse the huge collection of glass art, and wander the island on your own. Back on the boat, cruise to the tiny island of Burano to see the brightly-painted houses huddled tightly together along streets and canals. Burano’s main claim to fame is its centuries-old lacemaking tradition. Stroll through the streets to a small building where women feverishly stitch lace, just as their mothers and grandmothers used to do. Your guide will explain the process of this dying art. Then, you can follow in the footsteps of Michelangelo and pick out your own keepsake. Or, wander the winding streets, sampling delicious cookies at local bakeries. Unlike other tours, this excursion intentionally omits Torcello to provide you with more time on Murano and Burano, and with less time on the boat or trekking inland.

Great tour with guide Francesca. She was friendly and knowledgable. Tour was ~15 people on a small motor launch - very comfortable. Timings for the tour were good. Glass blowing was amazing but we went outside the artisan shop to buy a few pieces of glass as the shop was ££££. Burano was beautiful. We almost stayed there for lunch but did drinks instead and just made it back to the boat. Highly recommend.

Our guide Christina was exceptional! She was charming and very knowledgeable about the entire area. She went above and beyond our expectations. If anyone has the opportunity to request a particular tour guide she should be at the top of the list. Murano glass was beautiful and breathtaking. Burano lace was so delicate and we enjoyed seeing how it was made. Definitely a tour worth ever cent.

The tour was lovely and despite the clouds, we had a wonderful time exploring the two little islands. Christina our guide was excellent, and had lots of knowledge and interesting facts to tell us about her beautiful city. I also asked some questions that were about the surrounding islands (unrelated to our current tour) and she even had photos of that in her iPad ready and prepared! The only issue I had was that we had difficulty finding the meeting point, and were not given a number to contact to ask for help… the only number was one to the GetYourGuide office, which I stayed on hold with while trying to desperately find the meeting point… and never got to talk to anyone. Thankfully we found our guide eventually!
