Covid-19 Update

Due to health and safety regulations, this itinerary may change. See Know before you go for the latest updates.

For centuries, the destiny of the Most Serene Republic was decided in the majestic halls of the Doge’s Palace, where the Doge and his Council used to meet to rule the Republic. Walking through the magnificent halls and marvel at the well-conserved priceless treasures, art masterpieces, and frescos. Visit the prison, passing over the celebrated Bridge of Sighs, so called because prisoners often sighed while looking at their beloved lagoon and freedom for the last time before reaching their cells. Among the famous guests of the Doge’s Palace prisons was Giacomo Casanova, the celebrated seducer and adventurer who managed to escape from the prison in 1756. Next you’ll visit St. Mark’s Basilica, one of the world’s most stunning churches. As the name suggests, this cathedral is bound tightly to Venice’s patron, St. Mark, and the saint's remains are in fact here. Admire the breathtaking golden mosaics covering the high walls, which together with gold, silver, glass, and precious materials combine to create one of the major treasures of the Basilica. See the Pala d’Oro, an altarpiece made from hundreds of pieces of enamel on a golden leaf.

The Doges palace was larger and more impressive in real life than expected. St.Marks was closed on the ground floor due to flood damage from last November, but the interior could be viewed well from the upper balcony. The tour guide Monica was excellent, very clear, knowledgeable and considerate. It is worth booking a small tour to skip the ticket queues, as everyone still has to queue for security checks as well. We were also offered a free admission into a glass factory nearby at the end of the tour which was great.

The tour was organized despite being a large group during a supposedly off season this December. We were given a comprehensive history of the Doges Palace, Bridge of Sighs and St Mark’s Basilica by the tour guide, Gina, who was, incidentally, the best part of the tour. Gina was passionate about the subject and seemed very well versed with the relevant aspects of architectural, historical, political, economic and cultural life in Venice. She kept us engaged, interested and by the end of the tour, well informed on why what we’re seeing mattered. In all, this tour is a must for all those who intend to visit this beautiful city.

We met in St Mark's Square and it seemed like a confusing melee at first but they knew what they were doing and soon we were in groups of about 15 people. Sophia (?) is an excellent guide with a great sense of humour. It was just very unfortunate that my earpiece was not working well so I missed out on quite a bit. I replaced it at one point with another member of staff at entrance to the Basilica but it was just the same. Another lady on the tour experienced this also. The tour was brilliant though - and there is a lot of info to take in, so two hours was perfect for us just prior to heading to lunch. These two outstanding historic buildings are definitely a must-see in Venice - just spectacular, and with fascinating history recounted so well by Sophia. Highly recommended.
