Your scholar-guide will reconstruct what it was like to live in the Venetian Renaissance, and explain the factors that affected a Venetian’s quality of life. At the Ca’ d’Oro, a palace built in the Venetian Gothic style in the 1400s, you will see examples of typical Venetian homes, decorations, furnishing, and textiles, in order to help you understand the lives of people living hundreds of years ago.
As you walk through the city, your guide will point out different bridges with telling names that reflect the activities that once took place in specific areas of the city. In addition, your guide will show you decorative motifs and describe their historic importance in visibility, communication, and local politics.
Learning about clothing, etiquette, and personal hygiene are also important to understanding the Italian Renaissance, and your guide will describe the sacrifices individuals were willing to make for the sake of fashion. Based on the interest of the group, your guide is happy to take you to the Palazzo Mocenigo Museum of Fabric and Costume History where you can recreate some experiences of Renaissance-era Venetians.
Other topics discussed on this tour include how Renaissance Venetians moved around the city, how they made a living, and what they did for leisure; and general themes cover issues of identity, sex, gender, and social class during the Italian Renaissance.
