Experience

Highlights
  • Visit Vatnajokull - Europe's largest glacier
  • Explore the phenomenon of an ice cave
  • Hike over an adventurous landscape of rugged ice
Full description

Begin in Skaftafell before heading to the Falljökull glacier tongue. Gear up and get safety instructions from your skilled guide before setting foot on the ice.

Start by hiking to the ice cave while soaking up the magnificent scenery and spend approximately 30 minutes exploring. Afterwards, hike back over the glacier through an adventurous landscape of rugged ice.

Ice caves are only accessible during winter when the temperature drops well below zero –  the water from the rivers that run underneath the glacier freezes and leaves this phenomena to explore. Each year new caves are formed in different locations.

This was a very cool experience, although for the seasoned walker wasn’t much of a ‘hike’. A couple of the glacier cave photos I had seen prior to going were slightly misleading too, however don’t let me paint too bad a picture of this as it was still mega impressive and cool to see in person!! Brace yourself for the bus ride… it’s brutal

Great experience and a wonderful group of guides with Arctic Adventures - a must do if on a tour of Iceland's South Coast. We were very lucky with the weather and walking the glacier and seeing the ice cave was an eye opener, but very sad, however, seeing the glacier melt before our eyes.

Tour was organised quite well and pick up spot easy too find. Very nice crew. However, my husband and I expected a bit more action (real adventure hiking and a bigger ice cave) - based on the photos in the add ;-) however, the glacier itself was amazing and impressive. So we would recommend the tour!
