Hii, I was on a tour on October 23rd. Unfortunately we didn't have the best weather, but it was still so beautiful! The guides Kristjan and Lucy were both super super nice, funny and explained everything very well! The ice cave, or rather the ice tunnel, was very beautiful and great blue. Then standing on the glacier was simply fascinating. We were given ice axes, helmets and crampons, so we were really well equipped. I can really only recommend the tour! Full description

Begin in Skaftafell before heading to the Falljökull glacier tongue. Gear up and get safety instructions from your skilled guide before setting foot on the ice. Start by hiking to the ice cave while soaking up the magnificent scenery and spend approximately 30 minutes exploring. Afterwards, hike back over the glacier through an adventurous landscape of rugged ice. Ice caves are only accessible during winter when the temperature drops well below zero –  the water from the rivers that run underneath the glacier freezes and leaves this phenomena to explore. Each year new caves are formed in different locations.

What to bring

  • Hiking shoes

Know before you go

  • Please note that ice caves are an ever-changing natural phenomenon and, therefore, unpredictable. You will visit one ice cave during the tour and this cave is selected based on conditions and safety
  • The minimum age is 8 years old
  • In order to attach crampons to the hiking shoes, the minimum shoe size of the participant to join the tour is 35 EU, and the largest shoe size is 50 EU
  • Please bring a warm and waterproof jacket and pants, hiking boots, headwear and gloves (rental clothing and hiking boots are available)

Really appreciate the amendment of the tour as the cave is not the right shape anymore after rain and refund to us. Also it's very good to have rental gear like hiking boots to make sure we are all hiking good with proper shoes. Only drawback is wonder should we all wearing helmet too as we might fall and land on head when hiking on slipping ice ? Last but not least Lucy our tour guide is excellent and look after us good.
