Wow , my mind was buzzing with the sheer opulence of every inch of this museum . I visited in early November . I bought tickets about a month In advance so the queue was really very calm and well organised with minimal waiting time . Very important was the number of toilet facilities around the museum which was great again I was there in November so I found this not to be an issue. Also the two cafes in the museum were good value and a very welcome rest stop to rest the feet and recharge . The one way system does mean you should take your time in each area and only move on when you are ready as you can’t go backwards . I had lots of opportunities to get some amazing photos . Don’t forget to look out of all the windows as the views are gorgeous. You will never ever read and see everything in one go do plan ahead to focus on what you really want to see . The garden spaces are a quite restful spot for a break . I saw lots of people enjoyed a cheeky picnic on the benches there . I didn’t b

Definitely get there the 30 before. The guides are helpful and usher you into lines. I used Apple Maps to navigate to the entrance and it wanted me to go through the Vatican City. You can’t do this, they won’t let you in. Rather follow the wall around. Look for the tour guides they know what they are doing. Really good experience. A must for Rome. I didn’t get to everything so definitely would come back.

Peek at the Cabinet of the Masks, or tour the Sala degli Animali to see a virtual menagerie of fantastic beasts, real and imagined. Walk the Upper Galleries, including the Gallery of Maps, to see how cartographers depicted the world through the ages. See masterpieces by Renaissance masters in the Raphael Rooms, and rest for a while in the Borgia Apartments. Then, it’s time to marvel at Michelangelo’s exquisite Sistine Chapel, the crown jewel of the Vatican, and perhaps even of all the world’s art treasures.

Go directly to the Vatican Museum entrance on Vatican Museums, 00120 Città del Vaticano (Viale Vaticano) and show your ticket (paper and mobile voucher are accepted) to the security guards at the entrance, then scan your ticket at the box office CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after the security check. Please do not arrive outside your assigned time slot.

  • Tickets are valid for the date and time slot chosen. Please do not arrive outside your assigned time slot
  • All visitors must pass through airport-style security. During high season the wait at security may in excess of 30 minutes
  • Youth tickets are available for those between the ages of 7-18 (inclusive) with a valid ID card
  • St Peter’s Basilica and the Square may be closed in the morning due to Papal Audience
  • The opening hours are subject to change due to special events at the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St Peter's Basilica
  • Children under 7 years old go free of charge with a valid ID
  • Those with a disability and their carer or companion go free of charge with a certificate of disability, which you must present at the Special Permits and/or the Reception desk in the hall of the museum
  • June, July and August are particularly busy as they are high-season months

We arrived a bit late as public transport let us down (our accommodation was quite far out of the city). Fortunately we were still able to use our tickets and no questions asked about lateness! The museum is spectacular! We used an audio guide which was helpful and slowly made our way round the exhibitions. It’s huge so comfy shoes are a must. Only negative to mention was one of the members of staff at the start of the queue point was absolutely VILE (blonde short lady). We were told to join the left queue by another member of staff and she marched up to us and screamed in our faces to join the right queue. She yelled “I’ve asked you 3 times”. I apologized and said we didn’t hear you the first time and she squared right up to me (in my face) and said “oh yeah but now you can hear me can’t you”. Absolutely disgusting. I didn’t report her but I should have. I appreciate hospitality workers have it hard - but this was awful. I’m Italian so seems no one is spared from her bullying.
