What people are saying about Vacherie
Several years ago, we did the Oak Alley/Laura plantations tour. I remember it being pleasurable, but rushed. This particular outing seemed to provide ample time to both see the plantations, and wander around a bit. This was particularly important at Oak Alley, because time is needed to grab a bite for lunch. If anything, the Laura plantation tour was a little long. We could have used an extra 20 minutes to SHOP (and I'm sure the facility would have been appreciative of that as well).. But, as it worked out, the rest of our tour group was ready to go 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time (I think everyone was just tired... it's a long outing on a hot/humid day)... Trip was fun and informative... and locations were very picturesque.
The guide was great, and very knowledgeable. However we didn't get any time to walk around for ourselves which is something I would have appreciated. I like alone time. The tour was supposed to be 5 hours, but since it was combined with others visiting Oak Alley Plantation we got lesser time at Whitney (only 2 hrs, and the tour was basically a full 2 hrs), thus our time was shorter due to the Oak Alley pick up. That was not great.
When we went to collect the passes from 414 canal street the woman that we had to deal with was the most unhelpful person we have ever met. All she said was that we had to phone to make all our own reservations. She booked us on the city tour but didn’t then tell us we had to go & see her for wrist bands later on in the day. The phoning for reservations was a little stressful but luckily enough our hotel did that for us
I enjoyed this tour from the beginning to the end. Pick up was great. Oak Alley Plantation was of course simply magical, but I also enjoyed the alone time one was given, wandering around taking photos, feeling the energy. There is a lot of sad history here. Do not miss the OAKS - those giant trees are so marvellous, so amazing, and SO old. I think I obsessed about them the most...
Bus tour guide was informative, but the guide at Whitney Plantation (Ali) was phenomenal!!!! He discussed difficult subjects of slavery, shifts of power and greed....this tour was told from the view of the enslaved with very little specific time spent on discussing land owners.....ABSOLUTELY recommend. This is the history we NEVER learned in school.
