Not recommended for anyone who is claustrophobic or with poor mobility, you start the tour down many steps and slopes underneath an ancient church. The history of the giant cisterns that were excavated from the tuff as part of a water collection system for the growing city many centuries ago, is fascinating. The guide takes you through several chambers and some very narrow link passages as all is explained. Back in the open air we also visited what remained from a Greek theatre and a Roman theatre.. layers of history and building now disguising the origins of the buildings. Tour lasted just under two hours. About a twenty minute walk back to the central train station via ancient cobbled streets was most interesting. The guide was very informative.
