6. From Turin: food and wine guided tour in Canavese

This 1-day tour takes you on a discovery of Canavese, the borderland at the foot of the Alps of the Piedmont region, a natural gateway between the Italian peninsula and Europe. This region was a crossroad for armies, merchants, and pilgrims tracing the routes of the Via Salaria and Via Francigena through the valley of Mont Blanc and Graie Alps reaching Turin, the capital of the Savoy Reign and the first Italian capital. This land of lakes, hills, forests, and castles is protected by the Serra Morenica, one of the largest morainic hills in the world. Here the vineyards enjoy the sweetness of its microclimate, producing excellent wines including the Carema Nebbiolo and the Caluso Erbaluce. The Canavese cuisine has distinct flavors including cured meats and Alpine pasture cheeses, “Capònet” rolls of savoy cabbage with meat, stuffed onions with amaretto, “Ajucche” wild herb soup served with bread, and “Bagna Caòda”; the distinguished anchovy sauce served as a dip for crudités. All of this is just a taste of what awaits you on this tour. Detailed Itinerary: Noon: Guided tour in one of the castles of the Canavese region. According to seasonal availability and the clients' preferences, the options are the Castello di Agliè or the Castello di Masino. Turin: 3-Hour Gastronomy Tour

9. Turin: 3-Hour Gastronomy Tour

The gastronomic journey begins in the Piazza Statuto, in the historic center of Turin. Stroll through the narrow streets while learning about the Piedmontese region and culture with the help of a local guide.   Taste gianduiotto, the local ingot-shapped chocolates with an interesting history. Legend has it that the gianduiotto was born as a result of the continental blockade imposed by Napoleon. As cocoa was considered an expensive, luxury good, many chocolatiers in the region began replacing it partly with hazelnuts, abundant in the hills of the region. Sip bicerin, which in Piedmont means "glass," a local non-alcoholic drink which originates from another 18th century drink called bavareisa, composed of coffee, chocolate, and milk cream and served in round, transparent glasses.   Sample vitel tonnè with a glass of wine. The term vitel tonnè comes from the Piedmontese dialect and refers to a meat dish topped with an anchovy sauce. Although the origins of this dish are shrouded in mystery, it is known that anchovies from nearby Liguria were widely used as an alternative to salt, which had prohibitive prices in the Middle Ages.   Last but not least, sample an array of delicious local cheeses, many of them recognized with protected designation of origin (DOP) status.

What people are saying about Turin

Fantastic tour around Turin at night visiting places we would have walked straight past. Carolina is a local and took us around Turin like we were old friends. She was full of relaxed information about the history, food and wine of the area. My daughter and I had a great experience tasting traditional Piedmontese fare and were appreciative of the other recommendations for places to go to eat and drink for the remainder of our stay in Turin.

The experience was excellent. A real cooking class with an Italian family. Nothing like a normal class in a place, but rather cooking in the host house. The hosts were incredible nice and despite the fact this is not their regular work, they seemed well prepared and gave us a wonderful time together.

A brilliant, lovely, and charming tour of a beautiful and delicious city. Our guide Carolina was a delight to spend the afternoon with, and organized the tour to perfection. You'll leave craving everything you tasted. I only wish I could wrap the whole city up in my suitcase and take it home.

From beginning to end, I had a wonderful, truly authentic experience. Perfectly organized, everyone I encountered was kind and dedicated. Not only do I highly recommend it, I can't wait to do it again. A memorable day.

Interessante scoperta del mondo Martini, esperienza da consigliare a tutti, appassionati e non! Mi raccomando di terminare la visita con un cocktail e giretto nello shop
