Full description

Start your trip with a 20-minute scenic forest drive from Storms River Village to the drop off point in the Goesa Nature Reserve. Receive your tube and get fully kitted out with specialized equipment. Then, be guided by a local expert guide taking a steep 800m walk down the side of the gorge gets you to river's edge. Then, for the next 4-5 hours negotiate your way down this phenomenal river by means of flatwater paddling, bouldering, optional tube, and cliff jumps. Experience lots of laughs and spectacularly unique scenery along the way. At the half-way point, stop for a recharge with a chocolate bar and a tube balancing session. Then, follow the cascade down double dumper which brings you to your last few pools before the canyon majestically opens out at the Storms River Mouth Suspension Bridges in the famous Tsitsikamma National Park. Exit the river at the concrete jetty bringing you to the suspension bridge boardwalk. Enjoy a 20-minute walk back to the parking area where the shuttle bus awaits you. Drive for 20 minutes back through the National Park to Storms River Village for a well-earned hot shower.

  • Not suitable for children under 12 years old or very unfit people
  • There are many steps and bouldering sections which may not be suitable for people with weak hip or leg joints
  •  Most trips are conducted with medium-low to low water levels and so entail pool paddling, bouldering and walking, tube jumps, swimming, and optional rock jumps up to 8m in height; short pour-over and shoot rapids are water level dependent
  • Wetsuits are not mandatory but if you want one you can hire one

A great activity that we thoroughly enjoyed. Our guides were both very friendly and helped us through the rapids safely. There is a lot of time spent getting to / from the river but that is expected. By the time you add on the cost of the wetsuit and shoe hire (~£20pp) it isn’t the best value for money - this could really be included in the price of the activity as it is unlikely tourists will be bringing their own! Some photos of the trip would have really enhanced our experience - we didn’t think it was too rough for a guide to have a phone in a waterproof pouch and take some pictures that can be airdropped afterwards, which is common on a lot of tours now.

The area is absolutely beautiful and seeing it by the river gives you a unique view. However, there were several things with this tour that could easily have been improved. Firstly, on getyourguide the stated time was 9 am. Instead of writing and telling customers the changed time (they apparently only did it at 10 pm according to some of the staff this time of year) they straight out lied a said there were 'trees on the road' when we showed up at 9. This also made it terribly stressful at the end since the plan was to be back with wife and child a certain time. Secondly, the only snack given on this tour (9-16.30) was a chocolate bar, we were absolutely starving afterwards. We would gladly have paid 50R extra to get a sandwich. Lastly, the tour felt too long, 3 hours would have been enough if it is possible to go down to the river a bit further down.
