Watch magnificent humpback whales and orcas feed on shoals of herring when they migrate to Skjervoy between November and January. Enjoy a scenic panoramic drive from Tromso to Skjervoy, then hop into a rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meet at the Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromso bright and early. From here, drive for 3.5 hours to Skjervoy to meet your guide. Once in Skjervoy, receive a warm flotation suit before getting into the RIB. Then, set off on a 2.5-hour whale watching excursion in the Kvaenangen Fjord. Marvel at the natural scenery and keep your eyes peeled for orcas and humpback whales, as well as other local wildlife. We had a really enjoyable day out. An early start but a modern and comfortable bus with a friendly and careful driver. We departed at 5:30am and reached Skjervoy at 9:20. Two quick stops along the way and a toilet on the bus too. Once at Skjervoy we got kitted up quickly in our waterproof thermal flotation suits, boots gloves, balaclava and goggles and were boarded on the RIB at 10am after a safety briefing by our Captain and Guide There were 12 on board. We spent about 3.5 hours at sea and saw lots of pods of Orcas hunting as well as 5 humpback whales. Our captain (Norbert) and our guide kept everyone informed throughout and made sure all were comfortable. We were lucky with clear skies and calm seas so the trip couldn’t have been better and exceeded our expectations. Once back on land we handed our kit back and were given hot drinks and a nice baguette. The bus back to Tromso departed at 14:20 in order to get two ferries so not as much driving. We were back at Tromso at 18:00.

Following a pod of about a dozen humpbacks, up to a distance of about 10-20 mt at its closest, is something unique. Definitely recommending anybody to go with the inflatable boat tour. It's a little rough ride (we got excellent weather, though) but it's the best chance to get closer to the animals - still respecting their space - and offers incredible sights over the fjords. Impeccable tour both by organization, guiding and boat skipping, plus the bus to Skjervoy was comfortable and not crowded at all.

The whales did a fantastic job but the activity can be better organized, they are in a rush all the time, the boots are not waterproof at all after 2 min in the boat I had completely wet feet, for the price they should treat you better , “there are sandwiches and coffee grab and go back to the bus” organizer words! An earlier pick up would have made the day much more enjoyable.
