Overall we enjoyed this experience—although it makes for a long day! The buses were comfortable and had WiFi, USB outlets, and toilets. Our RIB captain, Brigit, was no-nonsense but we felt safe. We saw a pair of fin whales and several pods of orcas (as Brigit said, we were in “orca heaven”). There were humpback and sperm whales in the area, but we did not spot any. Tips: 1. You will not be able to leave belongings on the bus, but you can leave them at the RIB departure point. 2. We brought a change of dry clothes as recommended, but did not need them as the weather was fairly clear. But if it is raining or snowing you should bring spare clothes! 3. The RIB portion provides you with boots, a one-piece “overall” waterproof suit, balaclava, eye mask/goggles, and gloves. 4. After the RIB portion, you are given a few choices of sandwiches on baguettes and warm drinks. We brought extra snacks/food. 5. All the RIB whale tours from Tromsø are identical, so choose the best price.

Full description

Watch magnificent humpback whales and orcas feed on shoals of herring when they migrate to Skjervoy between November and January. Enjoy a scenic panoramic drive from Tromso to Skjervoy, then hop into a rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meet at the Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromso bright and early. From here, drive for 3.5 hours to Skjervoy to meet your guide. Once in Skjervoy, receive a warm flotation suit before getting into the RIB. Then, set off on a 2.5-hour whale watching excursion in the Kvaenangen Fjord. Marvel at the natural scenery and keep your eyes peeled for orcas and humpback whales, as well as other local wildlife. After your excursion, refresh with some sandwiches, tea, and coffee before driving back to Tromso.

The departure time is 05:30 am for whale watching tomorrow. Please meet up latest 05:20 am. Please go directly on board the red bus from Bussring/Arctic Route which will be standing right in front of the main entrance of Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø. Adresse: Fredrik Langes gate 2, 9008 Tromsø. Please take as many warm and waterproof clothes as you can (to have under our flotation suits) during the Rib-boat whale watching excursion. Please also bring an extra set of clothes to change after the excursion in case your clothes get wet. Welcome!

We had an amazing time on our whale watching trip, I can’t believe how many whales (Orcas, Humpbacks and Fins) we saw in 2.5 hours on the boat, amazing! We even saw a tiny young Orca with their mum! Our guide was very knowledgeable and she gave us lots of insight into whale behaviour which was interesting. It is a long day to get from Tromso to the optimum whale watching spot which was clear from the description and we knew beforehand but it was a stunning drive and the coach was comfortable enough with a toilet onboard and phone chargers etc. We even saw wild reindeer on the way! A sandwich was provided to take onto the bus back after the boat trip which is handy although I would recommend bringing your own lunch if you have any dietary requirements and also bring extra snacks for the long day! I’ve already recommended the trip to people I know and we will be back at some point! Thanks for a day we definitely won’t forget!
