  • Feed the reindeer in the nighttime
  • Enjoy a traditional Sami dinner with the Sami reindeer herders
  • Listen to stories about their culture and beliefs
Full description
A package experience to feed the reindeer in the evening and partake in a traditional Sami dinner with the Sami reindeer herders while they tell you about their culture and their beliefs. The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries, and have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. After a 25-minute drive from the city center, you will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 300 wild reindeer who will swarm all around you, with some even eating from your hands. You will then be invited for hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) around the fire inside a warm candle lit gamme (a traditional Sami hut). Here you will also be served a relaxed three course meal including bidos (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions) cooked over an open fire. A vegetarian option is also possible. After dinner you will be invited into a lavuu (Sami tent) and gather round the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests. If you are lucky and the sky is clear you will have a chance to see the northern lights directly above the reindeer camp.

Nice time at the reindeer camp. Very good dinner, especially the reindeer stew. Meeting with reindeer. Aurora borealis. I consider the story told by a descendant of the Sami people to be the best point on the agenda. I highly recommend!! short and full of excitement at the same time.

Short journey from Tromsø, a nice welcome and a friendly team. The reindeer were hungry and enjoyed our feeding. We were well prepared for the onslaught :-) Sometimes the animals ate out of the hand in a relaxed manner. Dinner was simple but delicious. The reindeer stew in particular was really good and we were happy to serve you up. Then we sat together in a Lavuu and learned a lot about the culture and life of the Sami. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of our seed. His story was very entertaining, interesting and humorous - we could have listened to that even longer :-) Please remember that you sit in rooms or tents with an open fire for a while. You and your clothes smell a bit like smoked reindeer afterwards ... But it was definitely worth it!
