From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

2. From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst (limestone) monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close.  A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries, and halls, an astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for the popularity of the cave and the large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years). The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious, and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance of the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best-known and most notorious owner – Erazem of Predjama.  The legend of the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his that helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year. Let your guide take you through these unforgettable sights for an ideal day excursion.

Trieste: Skip-the-Line Miramare Castle & Private Transfer

4. Trieste: Skip-the-Line Miramare Castle & Private Transfer

Book this comfortable private transfer to be taken straight from the Trieste train station to Castello di Miramare. Once you get there, your private driver will provide you with skip-the-line tickets to visit this beautiful castle. You'll then be free to start the visit by yourself, following the signs inside the castle and deciding what you prefer to see and how much time to dedicate to each room. You might want to dedicate a bit more time for the beautiful Maximilian's Rooms, particularly the bedroom, furnished as a ship's cabin, as well as the "Throne Room". Built between 1856 and 1860 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico, the building is strongly influenced by a Romantic taste, as a revisited construction of a medieval fortress. Don't forget to take a look at the large park (over 22 hectares) surrounding the castle, an English-style and Italian-style garden, rich in rare plants, sculptures, and ponds, with wide steps that descend towards the sea.  After your 1.5-hour visit, your driver will take you back to the train station.

Our original tour got messed up from my end. Tour guide Matt stepped in and made our day one of the best on our cruise! He spoke wonderful English, he is from ALASKA after all. We was a gentleman and well informed at all our stops and best of all had no problem stopping when we wanted to take photos. Thanks Matt and good luck at university. Angie and Marilyn

The trip was great. We enjoyed exploring both sites. The castle has electronic guide so you can progress at your own pace. The cave has a person that leads you through the cave.

This was truly the most amazing castle to tour with easy access by bus from Trieste. We loved the tour and the beautiful garden stroll. Absolutely stunning.

Great service and beautiful places. The organizer who accompanied us was very nice and helpful.
