From Fairbanks: Arctic Circle Northern Lights Full-Day Trip

1. From Fairbanks: Arctic Circle Northern Lights Full-Day Trip

Alaska is a land of constant change. On this full day tour, you will have the chance to experience some of the best and most unique things that make your Alaska trip a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Beginning at 1 PM, get picked up from your hotel and venture up to the Arctic Circle (66.5622°) north of the Equator, where you can have your pictures taken and receive a "Cross the Circle-Certificate." It is here that explorers have been venturing for centuries, drawn by the power the planet has to offer. As you continue your day, pass the Trans-Alaska-Pipeline. Here you can glance one of the world's largest pipelines, which stretches over 800 miles (1,287km). It is a crude oil pipeline privately owned by the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, and here you will learn the engineering and building process of this epic land-crawling beast. Judge for yourself its impact on the landscape around it. After the pipeline, head straight for the banks of the mighty Yukon River. Walk right up to the edge of its banks, where you will gaze out over the beauty in front of you. From here, head to the high plateau of Finger Mountain, where you will hopefully see moose, fox, bears, and perhaps even a mysterious lynx if you're lucky! Up on the mountain, snack on sandwiches, sweets and hot drinks. Through the night, travel back to Fairbanks. Soon, if we're lucky, the Aurora Borealis appears. This natural light display is caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms high in the atmosphere. The result is a breathtaking display of light that can be bright enough to read a newspaper by! Drive through the night, gazing up at the spectacular Northern Lights, before arriving back in Fairbanks around 3 AM.

To be honest- this winter (early February) trip is not for the weak! It was freezing! I had on a fleece lined base layer (top and bottoms), a turtleneck sweater, a fleece vest, snow bibs, a puffer jacket and an OmniHeat hooded parka with hand warmers and I was still freezing!!!! Not to even mention having to pee and stripping down all of those layers IN AN OUTHOUSE!!! Just getting out of the tour van for 5 minutes felt like an eternity! Having said that- it was worth every second of me feeling like I was going to turn into a snowman! 1st Alaska Tour was nothing short of amazing and all credit goes to our tour guide, Kirk! He was very thorough in explaining portions of the roads we traveled- how scary they were while making us feel safe. We really enjoyed his company and hospitality. Seeing the Aurora Borealis in person (and as early and as often) as we did was something I will never forget! We even got to see them at the Arctic Circle! What an experience! We highly recommend this tour!

The day was as long as advertised - 14 hours - but more fun & enjoyable than we expected. Our guide Josh was excellent! He’s jubliant to be an Alaskan living the life, and we enjoyed very much his energy, friendliness, knowledge, happiness and stories. It was a long drive to the Artic Circle and back home, but there were plenty of planned stops along the way to potty & stretch our legs. Learned more than we thought we would about the Pipeline. The views we had of the vast, beautiful, wild landscapes instilled awe, and somehow hope & optimism too. This tour is a good option for folks who want to see lots of wide open natural beauty and can handle a long time in a van with strangers (we enjoyed very much sharing the day our 4 trip-mates) while traveling on (mostly) rough, unpaved roads. Josh expertly navigated the road, but we still hit hard bumps, & endured long stretches of rattling over smaller ones. For us, a great day! An a souvenir certificate to boot! Thank you Josh!

It was amazing. We saw literally "everything"! Our tour was supposed to be 14 hours long but ended up being a 20-hour thing due to unfortunate weather conditions. But the tour guide and the other tour members kept us company and it didn't feel like 20 hours at all. We saw sun, rain, snow, sunset, sunrise, and most importantly we saw beautiful dancing auroras on our way back. The driver was very nice and tried all possible ways to get help in the unfortunate weather situation that caught us. We had a perfect Alaskan experience that day. Quick feedback: The tour busses should be equipped with things for different weather conditions (such as chains for snow and other relevant things)

Buckle up and prepare for a bumpy ride. I would recommend sitting towards the front for sure. Towards the back and in the middle you get views of the backs of peoples heads and the windows fogged up quite a bit. Even with that, I still rated it 5 stars because there were a lot of stops for stretching and pictures. It was a fantastic experience overall. Seeing the pipeline, Yukon River, Arctic Circle and wrapping it up with an incredible northern lights viewing were just awesome. You will ask yourself several times “why did I do this” but in the end, you will realize it was worth it!

14 hours in a tour van with strangers but it was the most amazing experience when you have the best tour guide! Josh is very informative, considerate, knowledgeable, know how to take pictures and a very good and safe driver thru Dalton Hwy in a snowy dark night!
