A highlight of our trip and an honour to be able to be allowed to attend an authentic Sumo stable. The power and grace of the wrestlers was truly impressive. Be aware that you have to sit pretty still for a couple of hours and this is a real training session and not a show. Highly recommended.

This was a great chance to see inside a working sumo stable. The 'guide' didn't do anything except tick our names off and hand us a sheet of rules on behaviour inside the stable. We were seated on two sides of the dohyo and watched four wrestlers do a rather laid back keiko practice. They didn't fight any bouts but did eventually practice pushing each other across the clay. It definitely felt more like a display for tourists than a serious practice (compared for example to the very serious Arashio stable practice I watched through the window a few days later) but they were very good natured and happy to pose for photos with each set of tourists in the group after practice. I enjoyed it but feel it was expensive for what it was.

We had a great time. My 3 year old was entranced and they made a real fuss of her at the end. A long session (2 hours) on the floor - make sure to let them know if you need a seat - as it needs to be arranged in advance. We left with so much respect for what being a sumo wrestler actually involves, including their amazing speed, balance and technique. They are surprisingly dedicated to their craft.
