Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold. In this technique learning class, you will actually repair pottery with a lacquer mixed with gold!
What to Expect
This is a very unique experience in which you will learn Kintsugi, the technique to repair cups or plates with a lacquer that's mixed with gold. This is a traditional Japanese technique used to repair broken tableware by making use of the broken parts and repairing it to look even better than before. The process is long and expensive due to the delicate use of the lacquer and gold. In this workshop, you will learn to understand how greatly Japanese people take care to not to make waste.
Traditionally, since the lacquer was made with poison ivy, one would have to be particularly careful, but in this experience, you will use a substitute lacquer and gold, allowing you to experience it easily and safely. After the experience, you will be able to bring the repaired item back to home with you. While working on your Kintsugi, you will also wear samue, casual traditional Japanese attire, at this clean and beautiful workshop facility, which is conveniently located in Omotesando.
