What You'll Do
  • Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a master swordsman
  • Slice up tatami mats using real katana swords
  • Wear a traditional kimono used by the samurai
  • Get picked up at your hotel by our informative, friendly, and professional guide who is fluent in English
Overview
Chop up tatami mats with the 7th-level sword-master descendant of a samurai, where you will learn about Japanese curved katana swords and how they're handled. You will wear the traditional style of kimono worn by the samurai, including the hakama-kilt.
What to Expect
Your translator guide will pick you up at your hotel and bring you to the training dōjō in Ginza. After you meet the sword-master, you will be instructed in how to put on the traditional kimono worn by samurai.

The sword-master will explain and show you various swordplay techniques in the Iai-style of sword drawing, and correct your form as you try it for yourself. This style of swordplay focuses on the fast unsheathing techniques used to draw the sword and immediately disable your opponent. Your teacher is a 7th-level master swordsman in the Hisui-style of Iai, and he has done sword performances at many of the most important shrines in Japan (Ise Shrine, Meiji Shrine, Yasukuni Shrine, etc.) as well as other locations in Japan and throughout the world.

You will also get the incredibly rare experience of "tameshigiri" – chopping up grass tatami mats with a real sword! After watching the master swordsman's demonstration you will get to attempt to cut the mat and compare your results. As you will learn in the lesson, when you have too many things on your mind, and when you try to be more than who you are, you will be unable to cut well. A major highlight of the lesson will be on concentration without thinking too much.

The full lesson will be translated by your personal guide, who will also translate any questions you may have for your instructor. After the lesson is over, you will be free to explore Ginza or travel wherever else you would like to in the city.

Groups of 4 – 8 will have a fully-private lesson, while groups of 1 – 3 may be placed together with other individuals for a semi-private lesson of no more than 8 attendees.
