Nikko Toshogu Shrine
After the great general, Ieyasu Tokugawa, died in early 1600's, his body was buried in Nikko and his son, Hidetada Tokugawa, built a mausoleum in Nikko, which was completed in 1617.
However, the mausoleum was quite small, so his grandson, Iemitsu Tokugawa, re-built it in 1636.
Because of this, many craftsmen, such as carpenters, painters, and sculptors, came to Nikko.
This construction costed about 16 billion yen (about $160M).
In addition to Ieyasu Tokugawa, Yoritomo Minamoto and Hideyoshi Toyotomi are honoured at this shrine.
Also, there are 8 national treasures and 55 important cultural properties in Toshogu.
Watanabe Sahira Sake brewery.
Needless to say, sake is now a world famous alcohol and it tastes much better if you taste this at the brewery.
You will have a special access to enter this sake brewery in Nikko and the sake master/brewer will do a brewery tour for you. This is a perfect opportunity to learn everything about sake and you will be able to taste some.
Sake is made between November and March, so you will actually be able to see the sake manufacturing process.
