Full description

Write calligraphy or paint a picture, and then turn it into a traditional Japanese "kakejiku" (hanging scroll). As a kakejiku, it will beautifully decorate your home and last for over 100 years. By transforming your handmade artwork into a kakejiku, you can deeply experience Japanese culture. Founded in 1936, we have been offering traditional crafts for over 80 years. Calligraphy and painting with brush and ink provide a uniquely Japanese experience. Kakejiku embody over 1000 years of techniques refined for beauty and preservation, resulting in a masterpiece of wabi-sabi just for you. You will choose between making an authentic kakejiku(hanging scroll) and simple magnetic tapestry. You will be able to take home with you the item you made on the same day.

Includes

  • History and Significance: Understand the historical importance and cultural significance of Japanese scrolls. Learn about the different styles and purposes they have served over centuries.
  • Materials and Tools: Get hands-on experience with the traditional materials such as washi (Japanese paper), silk, and bamboo. Familiarize yourself with the tools like brushes, glue, and other essentials used in scroll making.
  • Techniques of Scroll Making: Step-by-step guidance through the process of making a scroll, from preparing and cutting the paper to the final mounting on silk.
  • Calligraphy and Painting: Try your hand at basic calligraphy or sumi-e painting to add a personal touch to your scroll.
  • All the steps involved in making a hanging scroll: Traditionally, the creation of a hanging scroll is a process that takes several months to complete. For this introductory workshop, we will not cover every step in detail.
  • A full-fledged calligraphy course: Since this is not a full-fledged calligraphy course, participants will simply practice writing calligraphy on washi paper. Additionally, if you have your own calligraphy that you would like to use, you are welcome to bring it with you.
