Kyoto: Sagano Train, Samurai Theme Park, Shimogamo Shrine

Kyoto: Sagano Train, Samurai Theme Park, Shimogamo Shrine

Ride the scenic Sagano Train and visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, slip into the Edo Period and interact with ninja and samurai at Uzumasa Eigamura, explore the ancient UNESCO World Heritage site Shimogamo Shrine, and walk along the Meiji era aqueduct and tree-lined incline of Nanzenji. Board the Sagano Romantic Train and take in the beautiful scenery of the Hozugawa River Valley. After arriving in Arashiyama, stop for a quick photo op in the Sagano Bamboo Forest before heading to Uzumasa Eigamura. Be transported through history at Toei Uzumasa Eigamura, a theme park modeled after Edo period Japan. Boasting ninja shows and wandering samurai, this immersive experience will make you feel like you've traveled back in time to the Edo period. If selected, enjoy lunch here (sukiyaki rice bowl). Enter the ancient grounds of UNESCO World Heritage Site Shimogamo Shrine, whose excavations date back to as far as 2,000 years ago. This Shinto shrine, shrouded away in the verdant Tadasu no Mori forest, is known as a place rich in nature that helps to ward off bad luck and danger and bring good fortune in marriage. The temple grounds of Nanzenji will show you two phases of Japanese history – the Entrance Gate and Main Hall, built in the mid 13th century, and a large brick aqueduct and waterway, built during the Meiji period as part of the Lake Biwa Canal. Pass the roaring waters of the Lake Biwa Dam before heading down the Keage Incline, lined with trees that bloom pink in the spring and show vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows in the fall. For the winter course, instead of the Sagano Romantic Train and Arashiyama, enjoy sightseeing at Yokoku-ji (Yanagidani Kannon), a temple famous for its 11-headed statue of Kannon and frozen floral scenery. While Nanzenji is beautiful in the fall and spring, the magical wintry scenery of the ancient Kifune Shrine is unbeatable. We'll visit Kifune Shrine instead of Nanzenji.

We had so much fun in Toei Studio Park! All the old sets are amazing to explore and you can buy delicious japanese snacks+cute souvenirs everywhere. The highlight was definitely the Neon Genesis Evangelion area! You can take a photo with the lifesize Eva 01, go into the entry plug, check your synch rate and they even have a Nerv Cafe! Sugoi!

Quite a small park and unfortunately the activities are paid. The shops don't sell many goodies related to the park and Toei. We went there for the Yokai parade and it was very nice, small independent shops sold accessories

A very nice park to do. It's a change from what we can see in Europe.
