What to Expect
Explore Tirana, a city of colorful buildings and green parks, on a full-day trip that includes this tour of Albania’s capital city and Shkodra, an ancient capital in the country’s north.
Start your tour of the city center at Skanderbeg Square, where you’ll see the statue of the national hero Skanderberg, as well as the Clock Tower. A spiral staircase ascends to the top of the 115-foot tower.
Next you’ll see Et’hem Beu Mosque. Admire the frescos that feature trees, waterfalls, and bridges – images that rare in Islamic art. The National Library is located in front of the mosque, and nearby is the National Historic Museum.
In the history museum there are a number of pavilions with exhibits that span the centuries, from ancient times through Albanian resistance in World War II and genocide during the Communist era. If you’re interested in art, a visit to the National Art Gallery will complete your tour of Tirana.
Head to the northern city of Shkodra, the ancient Illyrian capital during the 3rd century B.C. Visit the Marubi Museum, where you’ll see an exhibit of prints that date back to 1856 and the oldest photograph of the Balkans.
You’ll also visit the House of Oso Kuka, a traditional Shkodra house that’s home to the town’s archaeological museum. Afterwards you’ll head to Mesi Bridge, built in the mid-18th century. Admire the beautiful mountain scenery in the background.
Enjoy lunch by the largest lake in the Balkans. Try the local carp, which is reported to be delicious! See Rozafa Castle, which played a role in the Illyro-Roman Wars, before returning to Tirana.
