From Thessaloniki: Private Day Trip to Meteora

9. From Thessaloniki: Private Day Trip to Meteora

Take this comprehensive tour in Meteora and discover the astonishing Meteora through the eyes and the narrative of the locals. Meteora is an area in Thessaly (Central Greece) under the rock towers of Meteora (258 km distance from Thessaloniki). The thing that makes Meteora so special is the monasteries on the top of the rock towers. The monasteries, the amount of peaks to climb and the paths for hiking brings many tourists to the Meteora, the whole year. 'Suspended in the air' (the meaning of Meteora in Greek), these monasteries represent a unique artistic achievement and are one of the most powerful examples of the architectural transformation of a site into a place of retreat, meditation and prayer. The Meteora provide an outstanding example of the types of monastic construction which illustrate a significant stage in history, that of the 14th and 15th centuries when the eremitic ideals of early Christianity were restored to a place of honor by monastic communities, both in the Western world (in Tuscany, for example) and in the Orthodox Church. The route from the Thessaloniki to Meteora takes about three hours. Visit 2 main monasteries of Meteora and discover the natural beauty and the cultural heritage of this area. This tour will take you back to the dark ages and the story of the first hermits and monks who laid the foundations of what later on became the monastic community of Meteora. Learn which monastery was the first to be established and the true motivations behind the monks’ decision to try to climb the steep rocks of Meteora and build the monasteries there. The program is free and can be configured to meet your wishes.

What people are saying about Thessaloniki

Great trip if you want to go to Meteora for a day! I had only one day left on my trip to Thessaloniki and wanted to visit Meteora without the hassle of public transportation. This was a great option. The bus is very comfortable and you're able to charge your phones on it. The tour guide was also very informative. She told us many interesting facts throughout the ride to Meteora, often pointing out sights to see. While we only saw 2 monasteries, I personally think it is the perfect amount to see. (Of course, that depends on the person) This is an amazing trip if you want to spend just one day in Meteora and see a few of the monasteries. If you want to see all 6 monasteries and have lots of time to explore the town, I'd recommend looking for a different tour. Overall, great option if you want to do a day trip without the stress of any planning!!

It was a great trip overall (so much so that I booked to go to Olympus and Meteora a few days later). The trip and the guides/driver were all great and very professional. The journey was long (3-3.5 hours each way), but the mini-bus was comfortable with USB plugs, aircon, etc. The monasteries are accessible by vehicle and so there wasn't much walking to do. The restaurant was nice for lunch, but you can wander around the village instead (there is a museum of natural history and mushrooms which was unexpected!). Overall, a really good trip!

Great easy experience to go to the Meteora. Meeting point was easy to find. The bus stopped once on the way to the Meteora. We went to two monastries. We also stopped at a viewing point. The lunch restaurant was good. The bus also stopped once on the way back. The stops are quick and easy. The guide, Lazarus, was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He shared a lot of interesting information during the bus rides.

Extraordinary day. Good guide, excellent pace and way of conducting the bus from Tolis. The driver Places to visit of incredible interest and charm. Very highly recommended Ammon Express !!

The monasteries are impressive. A little more time to walk locally would be great. The landscape is a dream. Our guide was super nice friendly and helpful.
