Hamburg's Fish Market: the 5 best eats

Forget traditional farmer's markets. In addition to fresh fish and delicious produce of all kinds, Hamburg's Fish Market also features parties, concerts and the most colorful range of individuals imaginable – it's not simply a market, it's an experience!

The Fischbrötchen, aka Fish Sandwich, is synonymous with Hamburg's fish market and a favorite hang-over food for the all-night revelers stumbling over from the nearby Reeperbahn.

Fischmarkt Brunch

For a more substantial breakfast, head over to the Altona Auction Hall and sit down for the famous brunch, which offers a staggering range of dishes accompanied by live music.

If fish isn't your bag, don't worry, sausages are very well represented at the market. Grab a Currywurst and join the debate over whether Berlin or Hamburg does them better.

Fruit baskets

For your vitamin fix, get yourself a 10 EUR fruit basket. Try your hand at the local auctioning practices of quantity over price and see how big a bag you manage to haggle.

Yes, it may be early morning, but beer is at least as popular as the fish. If you're up for it, join the merry beer drinkers in the Auction Hall for a pint and a dance.

The Fish Market Hamburg: Our Tips

When to go

The market is open every Sunday morning and if you can get yourself up at dawn (or if you're still taking advantage of the infamous nightlife, of course), it's well worth getting to the market early. Not only will you find the freshest produce and have the opportunity of buying fish straight off the boat, but the sight of the sun rising over the water is simply spectacular.

Best avoided during stormy weather

It's good to note that since the Fish Market is below sea level, it can get flooded when the weather is particularly stormy. Either don a pair of rubber boots or come back during fairer weather.

What People Are Saying About The Fish Market Hamburg

Very interesting and commentary in both English and German.

We very much enjoyed the bus and harbour cruise. I would highly recommend this tour if you are in Hamburg for a short time.

A very good experience. A good way of seeing the city of Hamburg.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day on the hop-on hop-off bus in Hamburg and found that we could see much more of the city than we would have under our own steam. It also helped to have an English commentary and we found out quite of lot of information about Hamburg than we previously knew.
