What people are saying about The Everglades
Captain did a good job getting up as close as he could to birds. He was very interesting with lots of great stories. But he was real proud of his captains license talking about it quite a bit and talking smack about his other captain who worked with him and I didn’t think that was very nice. He also wanted to stop at a island to check on his turtle nests which took away time from what I had paid for. He saw another boat ran aground on oyster shells and said he was obligated to check on them. It seemed he just wanted to see how big a idiot they were. It was nice he made sure they were not in distress, but again I didn’t pay for that as part of my tour. He was a great captain because storms brewed up and it took some fancy boat work to get us back safely which he did. Overall it was a great tour, but the things I mentioned just rubbed me the wrong way a little. I would go again. Oh!! Also, the tour ticket said it included a bottle of water and lunch. I didn’t get neither.
We were picked up right on time (10am) from the Holiday Inn which was close to the college Bayside Metromover stop and easy to find. It's about a 45 minute coach ride (airconditioned, not too cold) drive to the Everglades centre. We had 10 minutes for a quick look at the souvineers and boarded one of the boats for the 1 hour tour of the Everglades waterways. We saw 2 alligators - they swam close to the boat - and lots of great birdlife. The guide was fun and informative. After the tour we had about a 10 minute wait then saw the alligator show - about 15 minutes of a brave young alligator rescuer showing her wrestling skills and talking about her work to remove 'problem' alligators from public areas and homes. Then it was back on the bus and home. The $40 fee included 2 large glossy photos per group - one by the river before the boat trip and one after the alligator show holding a baby 'gator. As I was travelling alone, this was especially good value for money!
We were impressed with our guide's knowledge of wildlife, geology, hydrology, history of European / American / Native American interactions and the early and late development of the Everglades area. She had a sympathetic understanding of the imagination and ignorance of Florida's developers from colonial times onward to the present, the challenges they faced and those they left to the present generation. I only wish I had a map of the routes we followed that I might retell our story better.
We booked this and were there early. But the bus had already left - we saw it leave 7-8 minutes early as we were approaching the pick up point! We contacted the company and got rebooked for the next day. We caught this bus and it was a great day. The show was entertaining and the boat ride both fun and great for seeing the wildlife in the Everglades. Saw a few gators up close which was awesome!
We had an amazing trip, dolphins swimming alongside the boat, beautiful beaches and a couple of great stop offs collecting shells and hearing about the area from the captain, what an absolutely lovely guy, I would highly recommend this trip, if you are looking to see dolphins, birds and amazing views, and are keen to know more about the area, definitely book this trip.
