Montemerano was governed by a democratic institution until 1272, when it fell into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi. In the second half of the 13th century, it passed to the Baschi, the feudal family that funded its expansion. At the end of the 14th century, the “Repubblica Senese” forced the Baschi to retreat. In 1556, it became part of the Medici’s vast rule, before the Hasburg Lorraine assigned Montemerano to the Municipality of Manciano, where it remains today. The sulphurous waters of Saturnia were already known to the Etruscans first and then to the Romans who believed that the thermal waters, with their beneficial properties, were a gift from the gods. The power of the sulphurous water coming from a millenary spring has carved over the centuries the white travertine rock giving rise to natural pools where you can immerse yourself for a moment of relaxation and escape from reality. Overall rating
Guide Paolo is kind and loves children! He played with our kids without showing any signs of annoyance or impatience, even when they were clinging to him. Since we had been to Rome before, we booked a tour from Civitavecchia to Saturnia. It was quite far, but it was really great. The journey was long, so I don’t think I could have gone alone! I highly recommend this tour to anyone considering a port of call tour in Civitavecchia. We visited both the artificial hot springs and the natural hot springs. We didn’t go to the winery, but we spent so much time at the hot springs that it was actually hard to find time to visit. The artificial hot springs were amazing—I’d love to go back!
A fabulous day with Mirko! It was exactly what we wanted to do for our day trip to Tuscany. The villages were free of tourists, authentic Tuscan villages. The wine tasting couldn't have been better. A wonderful day!!
Had the best day!! I highly recommend this experience. Cascate del Mulino was busy but amazing. Saturina Hot Springs was luxurious and tranquil. Couldn’t have asked for a better guide, he made the day perfect.
Mirko, our guide, made it a great day tour. He was most informative and pointed out many points of interest that would easily have been missed. Many thanks again.
Beautiful place to really relax. I recommend it to everyone
