Ginosa: Between land and sea, Enogastronomic Tour
Explore the fascinating town of Ginosa, a hidden gem in the province of Taranto, just 20 km from Matera. Nestled in the Murge territory, Ginosa offers a journey through time as you explore its rock-carved villages and ancient history that spans from the Middle Paleolithic to the present day. Known as the "twin sister" of Matera due to its similar landscapes and rich cultural significance, Ginosa has been the setting for numerous films and is famed for its ravine villages. Tour Highlights: Piazza Orologio: Our tour begins in the heart of Ginosa's historic center, where you’ll receive a historical and architectural introduction. Via Matrice & Mother Church: Stroll along Via Matrice and admire the spectacular view of the medieval rock agglomeration of the "Casale." We’ll then visit the 15th-century Mother Church, built near the ravine, offering insight into the religious history of the region. Rivolta Rock Village: Delve into Italy's most important rock village, Rivolta, which consists of 66 cave-houses spread across five terraced levels. As you explore the first two levels, you’ll see cisterns, oil mills, niches, and places of worship that reflect the daily life of its former inhabitants. Rock Churches of S. Barbara and S. Sofia: We’ll walk along an ancient sheep track to visit the 11th-century rock churches of S. Barbara and S. Sofia. These churches preserve beautiful iconographic representations and provide a glimpse into Italian, Greek, and Benedictine monasticism. Craftsman's Cave-Workshop: Climb the opposite slope of the ravine to visit a cave-workshop, where a local craftsman will showcase traditional objects from the peasant world, offering insight into Ginosa’s rich cultural heritage. Panificio Piccolo: The final stop will be at an ancient bakery, Panificio Piccolo, where you’ll discover the secrets of wood-fired oven bread-making and enjoy a tasting of typical baked products.
