From Northwest Costa Rica: La Leona Waterfall Walking Tour

Must do when in Costa Rica! That said, I would not attempt this in recent rain or wet season, with kids under 10, or with any mobility issues! Great private driver to falls area where we met our guide, Ignatio. I was expecting this to be a private tour per description, but we were a group of 11. My partner and I did not mind, but take note you may be with a group. The hike in is fun with some steep stairs, lots of ups and downs, small ladders, mini rock climbs, and water crossings. The fun really started in getting to the actual falls. The current strength as you go thru the small canyon into the falls area is incredibly strong. You have to pull yourself thru using a rope, but even with the rope, the guide had to pull me up onto the rocks at the end. Stunning canyon. Go early as was quite crowded on way out. Note: My confirmation also stayed lunch was included but there was not even mention of a lunch. Bring snacks for the trip home as we were starved after an 8 hr day with no food.

Our tour guide, Verny, made the most memorable excursion for us! We had him all to ourselves and he was the best guide ever to tour the waterfalls. Safety was his number one priority and he ensured every step we took was a safe one. I was somewhat nervous about the swim to the waterfall, and he couldn’t have made it better for me. He educated us on so many plants, trees, animals, and history of Costa Rica. I never want to do another excursion without Verny! Will always remember him and how caring he was, and the pictures he took along the way were spectacular! He shared them all !
