The Taj Mahal's Top 5 Architectural Features

One of the world's largest mausoleums, the Taj Mahal was completed in 1643 under Shah Jahan, who commissioned it in memory of his most beloved wife who died in childbirth. So what are the top architectural features you should watch out for?

Onion Dome

Perhaps the most distinguishing part of the Taj Mahal, this massive feature crowning the building is popular not only in Islamic architecture but also Russian Orthodox.

Minarets

The Taj Mahal is flanked by four tall minarets. In recent years, the Indian Archeological Society has expressed concern at the fact that they are beginning to tilt slightly!

Iwans

The iwans are the pointed arches at the sides. If you take a closer look, you'll see they are decorated with intricate Koranic calligraphy.

Wall Carvings

The awesome tessellating patterns and sweeping geometry covering the inner walls of the Taj Mahal are proof of the confluence of science and art.

Makrana White Marble

The Taj Mahal's white marble changes color with the time of day. Pastel pink or blue, dazzling white - if you spend the whole day there, you will experience the whole spectrum.

Taj Mahal: Our Tips

Dress code

Please remember that the Taj Mahal is an Islamic building. Although no specific dress code is enforced, it's best to dress modestly out of respect - this means covering knees and shoulders.

Early arrival

If you want to avoid the lines, it's best to arrive at the Taj Mahal at the crack of dawn. If you're not a morning lark, don't worry - this is one of the most beautiful times of day to view the monument and its gardens.

Luggage

Lockers are available, but please note that your bag is likely to be searched - no food is allowed to be brought into the Taj Mahal.

Agra

Although you might be stopping at the Taj Mahal via New Delhi, the nearby city of Agra is worth a visit, too. It's easy to combine your Taj Mahal trip with a tour to Akhbar's fort and the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri.

What People Are Saying About Taj Mahal

Stop researching. This is the best way to visit the Taj Mahal.

Arif and his team were top class. Very responsive after I booked my trip - emailing me train tickets with details for his drivers and guide. Once picked up from my hotel his driver Rahman stayed with me at the station until I was seated on the train. After a speedy trip to Agra - 1h 45mins or so (compared to 3.5-4 hours by car) - Islam my guide met me off the train in Agra station. The Taj Mahal is spectacular and Islam was a great guide happy to take photos for you. One thing.. be prepared to be taken to a couple of souvenir stores - marble and carpets - but hey it supports the local industry and you don't have to buy anything unless you want to. Overall a great hassle free way to day trip from Delhi.

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal is lovely on a clear day ahead of the crowds.

The Skip-the-Line Taj Mahal tour turned out to be more and better than I expected, even with the good reviews that I had read. On top of that, it was a great bargain! Our excellent guide was Aman. He came by to meet us the night before and to confirm details. We decided to go at sunrise, which was a very good choice. The air was clearer than it had been, and Aman got us placed early in the line so that we were ahead of most of the day's crowds. The morning was cool, and the light on the monument was lovely. The Taj Mahal is beautiful, and Aman's love of the monument and its history were evident throughout our tour. He knows so many details and presents them in a very interesting way. He was sensitive and accommodating to our interests and desires on the tour. I recommend this tour wholeheartedly.

Wonderful trip with extraordinary guides and service

I drove with Kasim to Agra and had a pleasant journey. He is a safe and good driver, no issues with pick up or drop off. Saeed was my guide once in Agra. He was very accommodating and knowledgeable. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to see Agra from Delhi in one day. It was an early morning but definitely worth it. We did wait a couple hours at the Taj for the fog to lift and I am so glad we did! Thanks Saeed!!
