One of the world's largest mausoleums, the Taj Mahal was completed in 1643 under Shah Jahan, who commissioned it in memory of his most beloved wife who died in childbirth. So what are the top architectural features you should watch out for?
Onion Dome
Perhaps the most distinguishing part of the Taj Mahal, this massive feature crowning the building is popular not only in Islamic architecture but also Russian Orthodox.
Minarets
The Taj Mahal is flanked by four tall minarets. In recent years, the Indian Archeological Society has expressed concern at the fact that they are beginning to tilt slightly!
Iwans
The iwans are the pointed arches at the sides. If you take a closer look, you'll see they are decorated with intricate Koranic calligraphy.
Wall Carvings
The awesome tessellating patterns and sweeping geometry covering the inner walls of the Taj Mahal are proof of the confluence of science and art.
Makrana White Marble
The Taj Mahal's white marble changes color with the time of day. Pastel pink or blue, dazzling white - if you spend the whole day there, you will experience the whole spectrum.
Please remember that the Taj Mahal is an Islamic building. Although no specific dress code is enforced, it's best to dress modestly out of respect - this means covering knees and shoulders.
If you want to avoid the lines, it's best to arrive at the Taj Mahal at the crack of dawn. If you're not a morning lark, don't worry - this is one of the most beautiful times of day to view the monument and its gardens.
Lockers are available, but please note that your bag is likely to be searched - no food is allowed to be brought into the Taj Mahal.
Although you might be stopping at the Taj Mahal via New Delhi, the nearby city of Agra is worth a visit, too. It's easy to combine your Taj Mahal trip with a tour to Akhbar's fort and the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri.
Not only did we have a great tour of the Taj Mahal from Aman and a completely worry free drive from Vijay but Maria Tourz is a completely honest company as well. I’ll explain. I didn’t understand that the booking was for two people do I booked it twice, once for my wife and once for me. I would have never known my error but Maria Tours picked up on my error, alerted me and refunded the money I paid for the second tour! I felt this speaks volume to their integrity as a company. I would highly recommend using them with complete confidence that they will put your needs first. Kudos to them on running such a fine company. Rick and Tracy Portland OR, USA
We made the sunrise tour. Walking up at 2 AM to leave for the tour at 3 AM was a bit of a challenge. But we wouldn't have missed it, it was an incredible tour. Our guide, Mister Javed Ahmed, wasn't only our perfect English speaking guide, he was also our private fotographer... We had a great time with Javed, he was really involved and could tell us everything about the history and the reconstruction of the Taj Mahal. We are amazed about his knowledge... We enjoyed Javed's company and wish him al the best.
Our driver was very punctual and picked us up from our hotel right on time. He was a very skilled driver and we had a very comfortable trip from Delhi to Agra. Our English speaking guide was waiting to meet us when we reached Agra. He spoke English fluently and was very well informed about the history and architecture of both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Our guide presented this information in a very interesting way by telling us about the lives of the people who were connected with these two monuments. He invited us to ask questions during our tour and answered all of our questions fully. We all learnt a lot! We were all glad that we had the opportunity to pre-purchase our tickets. Our visit was very well organised, very Interesting and enjoyable.
strongly recommend the sunrise trip arriving at 6am, because roads are enpty, temperatures are low and Taj not overcrowded yet... Bring toilet paper! ;)
Highly recommend the sunrise tour in order to beat the crowds and the heat! The driver arrived at the hotel early (2:45am) and we started the 3.5 hr journey. I was able to sleep some. I met my guide, Umer, and right away he prepared me well for the ‘entrance check’. He was very knowledgeable and customized my experience to my liking ( I like the history, not just pictures!). Umer was very polite and cook several great pictures for me. My only disappointment is with the Indian government and how they maintain the Taj Mahal property.... none of the reflection pools were filled/ operational, what a shame. The tour of Agra Fort was quick... could almost do without this part of the tour. We were done by 9:30 am and started the journey back to Delhi. Overall a good trip. I recommend if the Taj Mahal is on your bucket list.
