Full description

Drive to Jelsa and visit one of the most famous Croatian winemakers. Jelsa is a small coastal town with a long and proud wine-making tradition. The Tomić family and 10 other people from the island of Hvar work in the winery. They cultivate indigenous grapes, but experiment with new ones as well. The family is constantly enhancing the production of red, white and rose varieties with modern technologies, but pay particular attention to Prošek, the original Dalmatian wine, made from selected and dried grapes of the highest quality local varieties. In the wine cellar you’ll have the opportunity to taste 4 or 5 different wines with a wine guide, who will describe the individual wines and tell you about the finest local appetizers that will accompany them. Also in Jelsa young, admire the ambitious ”wine newcomers” without vineyards or with very small land plots. They base wine production on grapes purchased from other farmers.

Here in Croatia, Dubokovic wines have become a ”must have” in the finest restaurants, hotels, and specialized wine shops. Dubokovic – Medvid wines now have the distinction of being the most expensive regular vintage wines in the country. The Carić family has been involved with vineyards for generations, however, it was not before Vino Hvar was established that they started to produce their own Carič wines. Their work in the vineyards is just as important to them as their work in the winery. There are 5 hectares of vineyards in the specially designated wine growing area known as Vinogorje Hvar. The family also grows indigenous varieties: Plavac Mali, Bogdanjuša, Kuč, Maraština, Darnekuša and Pošip. In addition they purchase a small amount of grapes from contract growers to complement their crop.

We loved the three hour wine tasting and even got a super informative tour of parts of Hvar we would never have seen otherwise. The winery was small, family run and so quaint. We entered the rustic wine cellar to find a candle-lit table set with cheese, bread and four hand-made olive oils, surrounded by the barrels and bottles of wine. We learned about their unique wines and tasted at least seven of them - which were fabulous. I would have bought a case of one of the reds but unfortunately we didn’t have room in our luggage to bring home even one bottle. But we did buy two small bottles of their delicious olive oil. On the way home our wonderful guide took us through lavender fields and to an old fortress while explaining the history of the island. It was well worth the three hours and I would highly recommend to anyone. Hvar has so much more than just the beautiful beaches and restaurants/clubs!

Great Guide who os from Hvar and told me much interesting things about the island. Wine was also great and snacks really tasty. I booked alone and they wanted to postpone as I was the only one. That was not possible for me so they kept the date and I had a wonderful evening with to other persons at the wine bar.

This tour is a must!

Our driver/guide was Dinko, he was a very pleasant man whose family have lived on Hvar for over 500 years, so his knowledge of Hvar, its culture and history was excellent. We stopped at a high point lookout for a magic view and some photos, saw old lavender plots, villages that are no longer operational as its residents have moved to town or away , saw beautiful olive trees, and visited the Tomic winery. The wine tasting was conducted by Antonia, she presented all the information in a way that was easy to understand, such history about wine, the area and what the wine means to Croatian people. The tour was informative and the tasting, Wow! We sat in a stunning tasting room, the wines were presented to us with full and detailed descriptions and paired with a small anti pasto plate. Such a great way to spend an afternoon outside the Old Town and learning more about Hvar and its people.
