What to Expect
The tour starts at 8:00am from your accommodation in Varna.

Your first stop will be the picturesque gorge of Suha Reka (“The Dry River”) and the archaeological findings in the river canyon - old settlements, rock monasteries etc. The most popular is the Rock Monastery in the area called Shan Kaya over the dam Onogur near the village of Onogour. You will have a chance to look inside the rock monastery and also to take a stroll around the dam and the canyon. This particular place is really stunning. Here, you will find some of the earliest rock monasteries, not only in Bulgaria and the Balkans, but also in Europe. They are believed to have been established in the 5th – 6th BC and declined around the beginning of the 11th century. In Suha Reka valley, which is also a protected area, there are more than 460 plant species, 16 of which are listed in the "Red Book of Bulgaria," as well as a large number of endangered animal species.

The next stop will be the Sacred Valley of Zalmoksis near the village of Strelkovo, not far from the town of Silistra. There is a picturesque canyon here between the hills surrounded by rocks with plenty of caves. The most significant of the rock sanctuaries in the area is called “Badjaliata,” a 20 meters high rock on the eastern bank of the river Taban. The rock cult complex found here includes rock sanctuaries, alters and cult platforms.

Your next stop will be the town of Silistra, a port city on the southern bank of the lower Danube river on the Bulgarian-Romanian border.

Here, you will visit first the Turkish fort “Abdul Medzhidi” or the so-called Medzhidi Tabiya fortress. It is the only fortress with a completely preserved interior and exterior from the Ottoman period in Bulgaria. It was built on the eve of the Crimean War (1853 – 1856). There is also a nice museum exhibition inside the fortress.

Then, you will have lunch at the restaurant “Drastar" with a beautiful panorama view over the river and delicious Bulgarian food served.

After the lunch, you will have a nice walk along the river bank where you will visit the Durostorum - Drastar - Silistra Archaeological Reserve with the remains of a Roman urban villa from the 2nd – 4th centuries, a bishop’s palace and a basilica from the end of the 4th – 6th centuries.

You will also have a boat trip on the river, enjoying the magnificent landscape for about an hour.

If you are interested, you can also visit the ethnographical exhibition with artefacts presenting the culture of Dobrudzha people from the Silistra region in the period from the mid -19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

Silistra is a beautiful town and you will have time enough to fully enjoy it.

In the evening, you will depart back to Varna.
